Try Hours vs. Express-1

Greetings to All;

Got a few questions if anybody has a moment.

I'm in a cargo van, based in the Detroit area.

Kind of narrowed my choices down to two carriers: Try Hours and Express-1. I like what I see from both, their pay is similar, although it looks like Try Hours has a slight edge of about .03 per mile and a little less expensive satellite fee rental. (I've been trying to do research on the whole picture and not just the mileage rate.) They both seem to be pretty driver friendly from what I can tell from talking to drivers and recruiters alike, and their wesbites.

My questions are, which carrier do you think would keep you busy the most? I know that everyone gets "stranded" with a day or sometimes two day layover here or there. But would anybody have any input as to who might keep an O/O busier?

Along with that goes empty miles, I also wondered about empty miles and which carrier might have less.

And would anybody know which carrier might get me back to the Detroit area more often?

And another newbie question, can you choose to opt out of going to Canada? I really don't think I'd want to do that with a sometimes 3 hour wait at the bridge.

Any input you might have would be helpful and greatly appreciated.

Thanks, K9man

first, let me just say that i am not leased to either carrier that you have mentioned.and also i do not operate a van, but i do have some thoughts about the questions that you have asked.

this is a question that no one can answer with any degree of accuracy.you might get answers from o/o's that are with either one carrier or the other but trying to figure out wich one will keep you busier is pretty much impossible.also, i would say that a one day layover would be the norm and sometimes two days. but there will be times that you will be "stranded" for up to three and four days.and that is why it's impossible to answer this question, because there are times when you will be running like crazy and there will be times when you are just sitting and going crazy.

see above answer.

see above answer.

with some carriers you can choose not to go to canada, with others they require that you go into canada.i would say that if you are based in the detroit area that you are severely limiting your ability to get to and from your home area by not taking any canada runs.sure it's a hassle much of the time coming and going across the border, but alot of freight moves between michigan and ontario and back.if you check the archives you may be able to find posts by some of the experienced van owners that cross the border regularly on how to to make this a faster process.[ontario vanman is one person that comes to mind that i think commented on this subject.]is the wait time your ONLY objection to crossing the border?

all i was really trying to say is that there are no real answers to your questions, because with this business it's feast and famine. you have to learn that when it's going good you have to be out there making the money so that you can get through the times when it is slow.DD

I know in the past Hours has had some company equipment on the road, if loads get hard to come by, the company truck will get the load first.

The Toledo Blade, earlier in the year, had a ad from Hours to lease a class D truck which tells me Hours still owns some of the fleet on the road for them.

When I drove, Canada could be a hassle and is more than likely worse now. Living Detroit you will more than likely be offered lots of loads no matter who you lease to. Remember with a van you can go through the tunnel. Fuel up BEFORE you go to Canada. A few years back, CTX had box vans leased on that all they did was run from Detroit to Windsor 3-5 trips a day running auto part from plant to plant.
