OUTRAGEOUS: My mom went to the Dollar General Store yesterday to return a small heater she bought on Nov.16,2012. They were going to replace it so she ask them to pull it up to make sure it worked. This was the only one in stock and it didn't work, She ask for her money back and was told she couldn't get her money back because she had opened opened the box/it. HOW can you find out if it works if you don't take it out of the box and plug it into the wall plug. She was also told she could take it to another Dollor General Store to exchange it. My mom is 72 years old and does'nt drive; and has to pay someone to take her to store (I don't drive anymore) and the Dollar General Store didn't have a problem taking her $ 25.00 plus tax ( paid cash) but won't give her money back. I am sending a letter to their home office to try to get her money back. Mean while I'm asking that all my family and friends boycott all Dollar General Stores this Christmas Season (I knoiw I will) maybe they will appreate their customers then.

I sympathize - my Mom is 70 ish too, and simple things can just overwhelm her sometimes.
If I could suggest a strategy that might get better results than a boycott [which won't affect DG stores, you know, being too small for them to even notice], I'd request that HQ allow individual store mgrs to use their discretion on return policy. Especially if said policy isn't clearly posted, so customers are unaware.
BTW: Best Buy has the same policy - I asked to check the compatibility of a device, and they said I could, if I paid for it first. And if I paid with a credit card, I'd have to wait for the credit to be refunded. I declined, and found the gadget elsewhere.
Return policies are good to know upfront - especially with Christmas looming!

How difficult would it be for the manager issue a refund of $25? Disappointing!

Boycotts are not the answer especially something as small as this. If they are big they mostly hurt employees. Not refunding is just wring and your letter is a good start. If you don't get the desired results start calling and continue to go up the ladder until you get results.

If one of your local stations do those consumer ripoff type news segments that could also be a good person to contact.
