Truck inspections.....

I've noticed that some carriers require periodic truck inspections within the company, are these safety inspections or just cosmetic inspections for appearance and cleanliness? What if you'd just had a DOT insp. and passed would they still pull you in for a company inspection? Do they give you a set date to get in and get inspected or just let you stop in when you're close by? I understand there are some companies that require inspections every 3 or 4 months. What's the norm for company inspections? Tom.

Don't know about the others. Our contract with FedEX requires us to get the truck inpsected by a certified inspector twice a year. Forms signed by the inspector must be submitted as proof of compliance. In other words, two DOT inspections each year.

Phil, Thanks. What about a DOT roadside inspection, would that count? (assuming you passed it). Say you get an inspection in Jan. on your own, then in March you get a roadside DOT insp. and pass it, are you good to go for the rest of the year? I guess what I'm asking, since you got 2 in the 1st 3 months of the year, would they want another one in about Oct. or would the two back to back inspections suffice. Tom.

My company just uses the annual DOT and a roadside inspection would not count as a replacement for that. This is a better question for whatever company you want to lease on to.

A roadside DOT inspection would count. If the paperwork was sent in and was in good order, the next inspection would be due six months later. It is not about calendar year or the number of inspections in a twelve-month period. It is about the date since the last inspection. If you paid to have a dealer do a DOT inspection in say January, and passed a roadside inspection in February, and passed another roadside inspection in April, the next inspection would be due six months from April.
