RE: TRUCK DRIVERS WANTED FOR A NEW TELEVISION SHOW

Mike and Mindy
So sorry if my being a real fan of truckers in general upset you. Almost all of the truckers I know are honorable, respectful, polite people. Some of them had jobs before becomming truckers that required the suit and tie. Many of them have shown courage beyond belief out there on the road. The person that sent in this add seems to me, to be saying that if you are a trucker you need lessons in etiquette. However having once been one of those suit and tie people I know for a fact that many of that class need the lessons far more than the truck drivers of the nation.

As for my Daughter, I have led three of them down the isle and each of them was proud of their father and their father was even more proud of them. I have even had two of my Grand Daughter take my arm on their wedding day and be God willing I will one day take one or all of my 5 Great Grand Children on the same trip.

You see Mike and Mindy I am no longer young. I have been a trucker for over 35 years and been proud to know hundreds of truckers. The American trucker is one of the greatest professional in the world. grant you there are a few that are a little rough around the edges, but I think that perhaps they have reason to be. I am proud to be a part of this group and very proud of the American truckers as a whole. If my faith trust and respect for the American trucker bothers you, Oh Well.

Maybe we've all jumped to the conclusion that the casting people are looking to turn sow's ears into silk (Or at least linen) purses, for the amusement of a national television audience - if so, I aplogize to Ms Jessica for my response. If not, I resent the assumption that this would be fertile grounds for finding sow's ears! BTW, the intention of the show is to teach etiquette for a special occassion, not for everyday - which is what the ignorant truck drivers could REALLY use...:(

I think it's real easy for us to get defensive in a situation like this. We know that the element that makes us like that is out there.

But, to make an analogy, let's say she was looking for loggers in Oregon. She ends up with this big, hard working dude with a heart of gold, but has never worn anything but a flannel shirt. Ever. When he sits down at a formal dining room table he can't understand why there has to be two forks. And, could someone please explain that to me? She could easily find that kind of person in trucking.

I vote for giving her the benefit of the doubt. This could end up making truckers look pretty good. And, we are'nt out there kicking Spotted Owls out of their happy homes.

I quess I am somewhat of a skeptic on this sort of thing. Most of these shows are themed on shock and controversy. Understandably so as those ingredients equal ratings, with in turn equal advertising dollars.
Again, unless this show is for PBS, I have a hard time seeing our industry shown in a positive light with the described format. As to whether it will provide ettiquette lessons to the current drivers, I wouldn't see them watching this type of show if they were lacking that skill to begin with unless there was something of a shock value.
Just a skeptic on these types of shows. Jerry Springer's Thanksgiving dinner comes to mind.

City Lights Television is a legitimate production company, actually. Along with City Light Pictures and City Lights Post (a post production company), they are a subsidiary of City Lights Media, a growing production company in New York. A lot of what they do is reality television, so feel free to lump them in whatever category you wish. But very little, if any, that they do falls into the classif stereotype of what most of us know as reality television. They've done some pretty good indie films under the City Light Media umbrella, too.

They are looking to do a show on Manners and Etiquette. Much like "What Not To Wear" or "Cover Model" (where Frederique and her team of experts would makeover a normal person into a sexy cover model, complete with the cover photo shoot). They do stuff that's on AMC and TLC and HGTV. "Movies 101" is on AMC, and it's a good show about making movies (kind of like "Inside the Actor's Studio" on Bravo). "Hammered" on HGTV is essentially Home Improvement meets the Last Comic Standing. They build anything, and keep you laughing the entire time. (Two brothers, one is a master builder, the other, literally, a standup comedian. It's hilarious.)

I don't think they are looking to make a reality show about baffoon truck drivers learning how to use a shrimp fork so they can be humiliated on television. They're not a production company for Fox. The have a little class in their shows, actually. One of their shows is "Party Girl" where they show all the gory details of planning, and then pulling off, a high class dinner party or some other kind of party at a regular person's home. The regular person in question has, to my knowledge, never been humiliated in the process. :) The reality shows where the "joke's on you" are soooo over these days.

They are looking for people without the routine high-level manners and etiquette that would normally be associated with some special black tie event. Truckers are almost cetainly just one of many professions where they will look for people for the manners makeovers. Loggers might be another one. Miner's are a good bet, as well. Anything the stereotype fits will work. I bet this one's slated for TLC.

I've delivered expedited freight to the City Lights offices in New York a couple of times. One time it was a bunch of cameras and stuff from the HGTV offices in Knoxville.

RE: TRUCK DRIVERS WANTED FOR A NEW TELEVISION SHOW

You know this follows a long line of TV shows that try to cash in on focusing on differences of the norms that many of us live by. Recently I was watching a wife swap program that was somewhat degrading for me to watch because the emphasis on the life style of one of the families.

I am not against this show concept due to the focus of the industry and the people in the industry, but rather just don’t like the Yahoo email thing – this is a personal issue for me and not really a reflection of Jessica or her recruiting efforts. I just see it as something from an IT point of view that it is cheap and needs to reference her company by any mean possible.

I go back to what I said before; it would be an interesting show if they can teach some of these people just to;

Wash their hands
Pick out clothes that don’t show their a**
And to show them how to wash their clothes

If this offends any of you, well sorry I am getting sick of people who call themselves professionals and acting as they are back in the 18th century ****** in the street. I for one want to see a change in the image of the entire industry but I know that this will not happen for a long time with the group of drivers/owners out there on the road. I mean it is not hard to take care of yourself and keep somewhat clean but just some of the van expediting people I have run across, just being downwind made me sick.

RE: TRUCK DRIVERS WANTED FOR A NEW TELEVISION SHOW

Dear MS. Jessica,

I am a truck driver and have been for most of my adult life. I am currently driving a van which shows some refinement on my part. I'm not a complete social clod, but could use some pointers for an upcoming event.
I have scheduled a colonoscopy for mid January. I have no idea what to wear or the proper etiquette involved in dealing with health professionals. I don't want to embarrass myself or the trucking industry.
Since it is after Labor Day I guess white is out. Besides I'm sure I will end up wearing one of those backless gowns. Would business casual be alright or should I wear a suit?
When I first meet my medical team should I shake hands and introduce myself (my procedure will not be the first of the day for them)or simply smile and nod?
If there is an intermission can I eat those little finger sandwich thingies? What wine goes with those sandwiches? If I am pleased with the procedure is it acceptable to ask for an encore or curtain call? Is applause polite?
Any help would be appreciated. I am very photogenic and would bring many fine assets to your television show. Previously I wrote to Miss Manners explaining my delima. Her curt reply of "stick it where the sun don't shine" wasn't very mannerly in my opion. So I am in need of your help. I don't wish to be the butt of some sick doctor's joke at the annual proctologist convention in Backhole, Nevada.
I anxiously await your reply,

Mr. Moot

Moot, the prostate exam protocal applies here. I had my first one last year and I did learn that the doctor is under no obligation to treat you to dinner and a movie before the "event".

This for sure can be for a making of a good thing, the show can show the positve portrail of the road warrior truckers that are hard core and out here working in the midists of America, keeping it moving. I seen so much Negitivity on this sight it isnt funny.

Give these people a chance you might be surprised.

But then again as it seem all of ya seem to think only inside the box and not outside.

Thinking outside the box has moved America to where it is today think about it and you know Im right on this one

Have a Safe One

and God Bless

RE: TRUCK DRIVERS WANTED FOR A NEW TELEVISION SHOW

Moot, I've never had the pleasure of a colonoscopy myself, but I've assisted at a few, so perhaps I can help alleviate your discomfort, at least until the procedure begins. After that, you're on your own, sorry to say - friendship goes just so far, you know.
First, wear whatever is comfortable, easy to stuff into a tiny locker, and especially easy to put on afterwards,( when you may wish you could just wear the paper gown for a few more days...)
You may certainly shake hands with whomever you like, but bear in mind that medical professionals don't always follow their own advice when it comes to handwashing. Do you feel lucky?
There isn't normally anything to eat offered on these occasions, unless you happen to arrive along with a pharmaceutical representative bearing lunch. Odds are, you won't be hungry after watching a documentary film consisting of a camera moving through YOUR insides, but if you are, grab the food fast - the residents have been known to clear a buffet table in 10 seconds flat.
Last, Miss Manners wasn't being rude in her reply, she was merely preparing you for what to expect, as I am - hope it helps. The best thing you can do to prepare yourself, though, is learn how to astral project. Good luck, and please - don't let us know how it went, after, ok? ;)

Cheri, thank you for the insider's tips.

Marvin, thank you for the box.
