I would never buy a diesel ... not saying not good. question was 3,5 or 3,7?
Mike, don't get all worked up over nothing. It was meant as a joke.

But back to your question. It is true, all of them will do the job. However different people like different things, some like to drive a race van, others are ok with a work vehicle. You need to drive both and decide for yourself. Don't buy what Joe Blow tells you to buy, it might not be right for you.

Personally, my first choice would be the 3.2 because I just love diesels. If I went gas, my first choice would be the 3.7 because of its simplicity. Last would be the 3.5.

275hp @ 6000 260ft/lbs @ 4000 regular gasoline flex fuel
310hp @ 5500 400ft/lbs @ 2500 premium (recommended)

So with the 3.5 you get about 13% more horsepower and about 53% more torque both at lower rpm levels. The torque differential especially could be important at some times. That said, if you use premium as they suggest that's 30 to 40 cents more per gallon which probably equates to 2-3 cents more per mile, a not insignificant figure. In 50,000 miles, a low annual figure for an expediter, that's $1000-1500 per year. Bump up to 75,000 miles per year and it's $1500-2250 per year. That's all based on the same mpg from both engines. I have no idea which would get better mpg but that will change the numbers as well. Use midgrade fuel and it will probably run ok and cut the difference roughly in half. Use regular and it will likely ping and knock on steeper climbs and heavier loads and not cost any more on fuel price and likely damage the engine over time.

My hero was the tortoise so unless I learned the 3.5 got enough better mpg to equal or better the 3.7 I'd likely go with the 3.7. My observations. YMMV.

Did you do the online build and list pricing available at Ford.com. l just did a quick build and it was 45k with a long/tall and required the 3.5 engine or the diesel. l added some stuff that was definitelty not required.

l don't trust online configurators very much. Clearly in this case it was wrong cause since it forced me to the 3.5 ecoboost.

Tall and extended requires 4.11 rear end for the 3.7
Tall and medium length can have the 3.73 rear end with the 3.7 engine.
If you want 3.34 rear end on the tall and extended you can have the diesel or the ecoboost.

The online configurator is correct.

I don't understand. You are not going to drive the ecoboost because you don't want the diesel? I didn't tell you to drive the diesel. I told you to drive BOTH, meaning the 2 you asked about. That way you can see which one works best for you.

I will not drive it on the road I mean. I want a simple engine as a possible.Plus In Atlanta no dealer has any of those two...

Fair enough. But keep in mind that BillG drove both and he preferred and ordered the 3.5.

Not sure where you got your information, but the 3.5 Ecoboost does not need premium fuel. It's rated for regular.

I went by the information on Edmunds that said premium recommended.

If you're not going to drive the van yourself definitely don't get the 3.5 then. Someone else driving your van with the 3.5 probably won't drive sensibly and that engine will suck the fuel if you have a heavy foot.

From everything I've heard the 3.7 gets the job done it just revs a lot higher.

My owner's manual recommends 87 octane gasoline for the 3.5 EcoBoost. It also suggest a higher octane may be needed for towing. I have read a few non Ford articles pertaining to the EcoBoost that recommend Top Tier gas when ever possible due to its higher level/quality of detergents.

My hero was the tortoise so unless I learned the 3.5 got enough better mpg to equal or better the 3.7 I'd likely go with the 3.7. My observations. YMMV.
In theory the 3.5 should get better fuel mileage than the 3.7 in a long and tall version because of the rearend gear ratio. The 3.7 only comes with the lower geared 4.11 rears. The 3.5 comes with the higher 3.34 gear ratio.
