Tires: Nitrogen vs. Air

:)Ok. I am curious as to whether or not Nitrogen is available for use in tires on Cargo Vans. Does anyone currently have this on their vehicle and if so what are the benefits? Is there any "real" difference between the two? IE: Better gas mileage or a smoother ride? Just curious to the difference. Thanks (OOps ment to post in "Truck Talk" forum.)

There was a very good thread on this a few months ago. I plan to do it with my vehicles when I can find somewhere doing it.

Smoother ride, stable inflation, better fuel economy, longer tread wear. Nitrogen is used in tires ranging from bicycles to NASCAR to big trucks and little trucks, to soccer mommy vans and expedited cargo vans. Just don't pay more than about $5 a tire for a cargo van. More than that and they're trying to rip you off. Many places fill 'em for free, like Costco and Pep Boys (when you buy the tires there, of course). Dunn Tire has it, so does Tire Discounters. Lots of places.

Go here, read it all, end up edumicated:

I have nitrogen filled Michelins that I purchased at COSTCO. They fill all tires with nitrogen and refill if necessary.

Keep in mind that about 3/4 of the the compressed dry air in your tires now consists of nitrogen, about 1/5 is oxygen and the rest is a small amount of other gasses. So when you get a fill of only nitrogen, you are only displacing about 20% the total air in the tire with nitrogen. Why nitrogen? It is an inert gas that has larger molecules than oxygen so seepage through the tire is considerably less. Nitrogen also does not support moisture.

As Turtle mentioned you get Smoother ride, stable inflation, better fuel economy, longer tread wear when Nitrogen is used.

I think the reason you get all of the above is only because stable inflation maintains the ride you desire, smooth or hard. Stable inflation at recommended pressures also gives you better fuel economy and improved tread wear. This all could be most important on dual wheels where stable and equal pressures on each tire are essential for fuel and tire economy.

As you live in Ohio I suggest checking with Tire Discounters.

They rotate, balance and fill with Nitrogen every 5,000 miles.

Van price: $69.95 for as long as you own the vehicle.

That's a pretty good deal. I pay $20 to have mine rotated and topped with nitrogen, about every 20,000 miles. I do that 4 or 5 times a year.

Yes, I thought it was a great deal!

My Chevy dealer offers me a commercial discount and takes into consideration that I have bought two vans in the past two years, but they charge $16.95 just to rotate the tires.

$69.95 covers the balance, rotation and nitrogen for as long as you own the van. You may come in every 5000 miles if you so desire.

PS. In order to be posting exact information, the actual total was $74.85 which includes a 7% sales tax in Montgomery County.

PSS. Credit for the above information goes to The Ohio Department of Taxation and The Montgomery County Department of Taxation and Tire Discounter's Inc.
