Tires that do not pass an inspection could seriously impact a driver’s and a carrier’s safety score. A failed inspection includes (1) any tire on a steering axle with less than 4/32 inch at any point on a major tread groove. (2) Any tire other than those on a steering axle must have a minimum of 2/32 inch at any point on a major tread groove. (3) Body ply or belt material exposed through the tread or sidewall, or in a cut. (4) Tread or sidewall separation. (5) Tire is flat or has a noticeable leak. (6) So mounted or inflated that it comes in contact with any part of the vehicle, or its mate. Additional information is contained in §393.75 of the FMCSA regulations. Tread depth gauges are available at auto supply stores for about 2 dollars
A defective tire could earn a driver 8 severity weight points, under inflation or exceeding the weight load limit of a tire could garner 3 points. If any tire meets the federal out of service criteria of 2/32 inch on steer tires or 1/32 inch on all other tires, an additional 2 severity weight points are assigned.
