i keep track of how much time i sit at traffic lights, stops signs
making lefts turns etc
so here is some number for entertainment
avg red light in hampton roads area is 3.5 min's to make a cyle
if you drive 42.5 mph you can hit most lights green in a 45 mph zone
or in 35 mph zone 33 mph works to
so with this avg 63 min's a day stop and waitting for the light to change or stop sign
for the week 5 day's 315 min's
for the month 1,260 min's
for the year's 15,120 mins

some may thinks this is to much time have to something with my time
so though i would share this

It's cool, geo. I sometimes pass the long hours driving overnight wondering how it came to be that the white center lines are one length in one state and another length in another. :)

Yes, I think about ways to hit all the green lights as well.

Hey Phil,

You've been to California a lot lately. Do they still have sections of the freeway in LA that have NO white line between lanes and only the little white reflector tabs?

Well I remember reading about UPS local drivers doing city PU and deliveries will not make any left turns anymore just because of the fact that they have to wait to long to make a left turn. This started after the price of gas and diesel jumped up so high...

Back in '95 I worked with a consulting firm who worked on a JIT system for the beer delivery system in major markets and try to apply to medical labs.

The idea behind hiring these clowns was to reduce the turn around time on Lab tests for doctors from 24/48 hours to less than 14 hours. There were several problems with this idea, one was that the transportation department lacked the personal to make changes like this, another was the rest of the lab was not equipped to run 24/6 as required and the last but most important the doctors didn't care because the results would sit and wait until they are ready to reveiw them.

well as it turned out, we the staff of the department had to review every route and provide timing information on every light that the driver encountered during his/her route. This time consuming process took a few months to do and was the basis for the data needed for the routing program that they talked the lab into buying. I sort of cheated and called the counties to get the needed data for the routes I was assigned to. I learned a lot about traffic engineering and how not to ruin a viable and successful company. The company lasted 14 months after the system was implimented, which by the way I left just before that. the doctors got fed up with the 'fine tuning' of the routes and dropped the lab as fast as they could.

It worked for the beer industry but not medical labs.

As for timeing of the lights, Michigan is a mess and I really trully think that it is an idea that Granholm told the MDOT to retime the lights to increase fuel consumption to capture more tax revenue.

That's waaay out there, Greg - but if you're correct, maybe the next item on her list is to smooth the roads in Detroit, so drivers will actually be able to drive 70 mph, wasting even more fuel! Then they could remove every third street sign, forcing drivers to drive around looking for streets, and - oh wait - I believe they've already started on that one, no? :D

Actually, UPS designs their routes for them (remember, they're employees)so that they have as few left turns as possible. This actually makes their route more time efficient.

Phil, I believe that California is located somewhere in outer space, near the nebula of Paris Hilton, who by the way, I understand tonight, is staying neither in Paris, nor at The Hilton!
