3 teens killed in Mexico, 2 of them US citizens

By OLIVIA TORRES and JUAN A. LOZANO, Associated Press – Mon Feb 7, 9:50 pm ET

CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico – Three teenage boys were shot to death in the Mexican border city of Ciudad Juarez, at least two of them U.S. citizens and high school students in Texas, authorities said Monday.

The boys were killed at 4:22 p.m. Saturday while looking at cars in a dealership in the city across the border from El Paso, Texas, Chihuahua prosecutors' spokesman Arturo Sandoval said. One was found inside a white Jeep Cherokee and the other two in the courtyard.

There were no leads on suspects or a motive, Sandoval said. Two managers were also in the dealership during the attack. One refused to give a statement, while the statement from the other manager was not released because of the pending investigation, Sandoval added. At least 60 bullet casings were found at the scene.

One of the boys, Carlos Mario Gonzalez Bermudez, 16, was a sophomore at Cathedral High School in El Paso, said Nick Gonzalez, the Roman Catholic brother who is the principal. Another victim, Juan Carlos Echeverri, 15, had been a freshman at the private all-boys Catholic school last year but left to study in Ciudad Juarez, Gonzalez said.

Both were U.S. citizens, he said. The U.S. Embassy in Mexico City said it could provide no immediate information on the case.
The third teenager was identified as Cesar Yalin Miramontes Jimenez, 17.

The school principal said Gonzalez Bermudez mainly lived in Ciudad Juarez and commuted each day across the border. He said 20 percent of the 485 students enrolled at Cathedral are from Ciudad Juarez.

Gonzalez said the school's sophomore class had a prayer service Monday and officials planned a rosary service for the entire school later in the week.

"It's a lot of pain, a lot of sorrow, a lot of tears, a lot of coming together as a community to try to hold each other up and to try and make sense today," Gonzalez said. "How do you make sense of this meaningless tragedy? Hopefully this can really empower us to make a positive change in the border community because their deaths will have no meaning otherwise."

Many Ciudad Juarez residents travel across the border on a daily basis for work or study. Some Mexicans live in El Paso for safety reasons and commute to Ciudad Juarez.

Ciudad Juarez city has become one of the world's most dangerous cities amid a fierce turf war between the Sinaloa and Juarez drug cartels. More than 3,000 people were killed last year in the city of 1.3 million residents.

Gonzalez said students at the school have had a number of relatives killed in the violence in Ciudad Juarez. A graduate of the school was killed last fall, he said.

"Our Juarez kids knew all three" of the teenagers killed over the weekend, he said. "It's a very tight knit community. A lot of them car pool; that's how they know each

Yeah ... and?

What's this have to do with anything?

How about the two girls who were not in Mexico but got raped and beaten in Chicago?

Maybe there should be no travel allowed to Mexico. Perhaps if all Americans and their money were cut off for a while the Mexicans would do something about their country.

In answer to the other question if DNA absolutely proves who raped the girls in Chicago the rapist should be executed.

When was that war "declared"??? According to the obama admin. our borders are safer then they have ever been and the gun problem in Mexico is an AMERICAN problem...all of the guns used in crimes in Mexico come from Ameruca because guns in the hands of Mexican ctizens is illegal....

I mean the left continues to this day to ay we never declare war in Iraq...so when was war with Mexico declared, and was it declared against the State (country) of Mexico???

Where are the US troops stationed in Mexico that are fighting this war???How many of our troops have been killed IN Mexico during this war?? Were they killed by the Mexican army???

If you want to discuss what happened to these girls in Chicago, then you should post a link to that story for everyone to read.

I don't understand your "so what" attitude of late. More and more you're coming into other member's posts and "poo pooing" what they bring as not having as much importance as whatever other story is on your mind at the time.

Two of these boys were US citizens but I guess that doesn't have anything to do with anything......

Thus speaketh the voice of authoritarianism:

Maybe there should be no travel allowed to Mexico. Perhaps if all Americans and their money were cut off for a while the Mexicans would do something about their country.
I'm always amazed at how willing ..... indeed how eager those with an authoritarian mind-set are to constrain the freedoms of those have done nothing wrong, and who have committed no crime ... it's as though they don't even give it a second thought .....

No, on second thought, that's not right .... it's almost as though they give it no thought at all .....

Must come natural for some people or something .....

Many Churches all across America has done just this.

I have a neice and nephew who used to go to Mexico every summer with their church group to do humanitary work. (Build houses, clean up neighborhoods, teach, etc) All the Churches in their town cancelled those trips 2 summers ago. Even if the Churches didn't cancel the trips on their own, no parents in their little town would've allowed their kids to go anyways due to what we are seeing on TV just about every night with the violence in Mexico.

Just had another neice (this one's 30 years old) that turned down a free trip to Cancun from one of her companies clients. (she's in Marketing) Told 'em "Thanks for the offer, but No Thanks". Hopefully the client understood and didn't get offended.

Yes, I think this is the kind of thing that LDB was referring to rather than any kind of dictatorial mandate. Let us not forget that it wasn't that long ago that we had a missionary killed there.

Also, these young people that were recently killed were merely looking at cars at a car lot, according to the news story.

As I said, yeah?

Read the story carefully and see if you can figure out that there is killing going on in that city then ask yourself why are you there in the first place. The citizenship issue is meaningless when you know they travel between the two countries and that the city is one of the most dangerous. There is nothing that could be or should be done, it is up to their parents and the kids themselves not to put to be put in harms way.

On the other hand the story I eluded to is a valid story to be concerned about, it happened in the United States, not the country of Mexico. It happened to two girls who were going out, and no I can't link to it because I don't have a link to it.

The point is that this is not as important as other stories.

Mexico has a serious problem with crime and I consider it in a civil war on top of the undeclared war on the US by providing assistance to invaders to our country. IT is up to the Mexican people to fix the problem and I beleive there is enough good people living there to fix the problem. Outside of a complete mobilization of our military on the border and an all out invasion into Mexico, I don't see one reason why we should do a thing over something like this.

I have to agree with Diva Greg some of your posts have been rather condescending the last few months. A whole lot of your posts have been started with: who cares, what's it matter, So? or you guys just don't get it, I could go on but I won't bore you.

our citizens get killed all over the world....3 mexican kids playing around in one of the most dangerous places....they should win a posthumous award for stupidity....

journalists go into a war zone...knowing the danger and we are supposed to get bent out of shape over it?

there are far more serious things happening right here that need to be addressed....

Did you miss the part about 2 of the boys being American citizens?? And yes, our citizens DO get killed all over the world, and it usually makes headlines, as it should.

Is it really true that Obama signed the agreement allowing Mexican truck drivers to drive freely on our interstates without inspections?

Someone please quote on this.

Yes my posts have been somewhat condesending in the past few months but look at the threads and the content to see why.

Fact - two of the KIDS were US citizens but wasn't one living in Mexico?

Fact - they knew it was a war zone, some of their fellow students had relatives killed in that very city.

Fact - their families didn't stop them from going knowing that there is open killing of people there (I think this is the city where the last police chief just disappeared and the one before had his head cut off), at 16 how did they get across the border unaccompanied?

Fact - there is sensationalized reporting going on and purposefully ignoring other crimes here.

Fact - that we have already a lot of drug related crime in places like Tucson and Pheonix which doesn't get reported in the news as this did, which include kids **READ US CITIZENS** and no one seems to care.

It is sad this happened but regardless what in the hell are we supposed to do about it, invade Mexico?

The focus shouldn't be on stupidity of 16 year old kids "looking for a car" but rather asking the question why are we allowing open borders, what is the policy of the US about minors crossing the border and why isn't there a serious effort to close the border off completely?

On top of this we have our DHS seceratary "warning" the drug cartels that if they come here, they will be in trouble. I don't think that was much more of a conversation starter for those who are doing the killing on BOTH sides of the border.

IF you think I am off with this subject, well that's just too bad. We have several problems in this country, from Slavery to human trafficking to crime that happens by people who cross an open border. I don't condemn those who want to make a living in a safe environment but rather can't help then and see it like it is - without the sensationalized news about something that happened in another country where we have absolutely no control over.
