I am wondering who is going to "yell" about it.
Awww .... he might be talkin' about his "apology" thread - I commented to the "powers that be" about it being locked - simply because it looked to me that the only (or real) reason for locking it was my last posts (that were directed to you Greg) - although it certainly could have been cheri's comments on the matter.

Fact is, I didn't "yell" about it .... I just commented about the appearance of it:

A moderator starts a public apology thread and then leaves the thread open, allowing others to join in .... and in fact, invites participation - by repeatedly allowing others to post and then responding to their posts - then either folks or some commentary that the moderator doesn't care for come along in the thread, and suddenly the only purpose for having posted the thread was to apologize (which could have been done just as easily privately)

If that were really true, one wonders why a moderator wouldn't just post the apology - and then immediately lock the thread.

You and Leo both have the power to simply lock it but instead choose to just add to it.
Yeah ..... often with some sort of inane chatter that has absolutely nothing to with either the original thread, or even where the thread has ended up going .....

It's almost as though someone thinks that this drivel will resolve an existing issue between one or more parties, or it "divert" the thread into another direction. It won't do either.

The only thing that is ever likely to resolve an issue to between one of more parties is additional communication between those parties. Perhaps the best advice a moderator could give would be: "Take it private ....."

Stopping communication is likely to have a much different outcome - and it can actually have the exact opposite effect - since folks feel as though they are not being allowed to speak - and it can make people more determined than ever to have their say, in one way or another.

Some putting a halt to things has to be done for various reasons - such as allowing parties a chance to cool off - but it should always be the heavy-handed tool of last resort.

I think (sarcastically put) that's the purpose of a moderator is to moderate threads within the forum so they don't become a p*ssing contest, right?
That was what I've always understood .....

Moderating is a tough row to hoe, and a fairly thankless job for the most part. It's a fine line - one has to balance any imposed restraint with allowing folks to have their say (regardless of whether a moderator cares for the message or not)

At the point where moderating becomes too heavy handed, places have a tendency to become ghost towns - the same result as when there is no moderation whatsoever .... and things then degrade to a point where anyone or everyone is repelled by what does get posted.

BTW, couple of other things:

1. If one wished to show any respect whatsoever to the originator of thread one would at least make an effort to stay somewhat on-topic - as was determined by the originator when they started the thread.

2. Someone might as well just rename this thread "September Inane Banter II" .....

3. Moderators who can't do at least No.1 above as part of doing their job end up just becoming somewhat of joke (even if only privately)

Nope, not it at all. Didn't think you were yelling at me. I hear more in PM then I ever do in the open.

Don't want to become an 800lb gorillia jumping on posts etc. Not cool. Should not even have to.

Might have to get a BIT tougher to allow things to cool off as you say. Most ADULTS SHOULD be able to get past this silly stuff without being beat up by the "mods", don't you think?

That's why I said might

Yeah - there's an entire PM subculture here on EO .... interesting phenomena .....

Me, I don't do the PM thing much.

Don't want to become an 800lb gorillia jumping on posts etc. Not cool.
Very good - unfortunately, that is essentially what occurred de facto with the thread I referred to ...

Should not even have to.
That is exactly right .... you shouldn't.

Might have to get a BIT tougher to allow things to cool off as you say.
If you think "toughness" is what is required, then you've missed the point entirely.

Ham-handed force is not what is required - finesse and intelligent moderation - which requires good communication skills at the appropriate time - is what is needed.

Most ADULTS SHOULD be able to get past this silly stuff without being beat up by the "mods", don't you think?
Yeah, I actually do .... of course, when those doing the moderating become silly themselves, then it becomes a case of the insane asylum being run by the inmates .....

It's fairly easy to see how this particular thread went off the rails: someone with an agenda sought to insert that agenda into the thread .....

In this instance, that is the source of the problem .... as it often is, with a great many threads (someone pushing an agenda ....)

That was my mistake. What I SHOULD have done was posted my original post and locked it right from the start. I ONLY locked it because: ONE, I started it and TWO, did NOT want it to get away from what I intended. That was the ONLY reason.

Sometimes "tough" works, other times it does not. Tough is not really my style. On the other hand, few in here seem to understand my style, so that don't work either. Nope, won't say what I was just writing either. I think it's funny therefor it will just tork everyone off. It is kinda funny though, this venue is the ONLY place in my entire life that I have had a problem with ANYONE understanding what I mean. I still think it is because it is not face to face, who knows, nothin I can do about it. Too old and too ornry to change now.

All I've been doing lately is driving and sleeping, mostly driving. I'm on a long load right now. So I haven't had much of a chance to respond publicly or privately, so here it is. It will be my final word in this thread, at least.

Either way, will you be apologizing publicly for calling aristotle "a dick"??
The man posted contents of a PM in public. I never apologize for the truth.

You gonna apologize to the EO members for using multiple screen names - again?

And then getting busted by such a rookie mistake. BBWWWAAAHHHAAAA
God, how pathetic.

Whether anyone deserves to be called any particular name or not is debatable perhaps. What it isn't is allowable under the rules of the forum. Call the politicians, the celebutards, the policies and agendas idiotic and moronic since especially now they are the most of each we've ever seen in the history of this nation. Direct name calling from one member to another however is not kosher.
Kosher? Neither is a premeditated unprovoked and unwarranted smear campaign propagated by one member against another (in this case more than one member), one that included name calling, fabricated allegations, and outright lies, and then the moderators and administrators turn a blind eye and let it continue unabated in thread after thread. Considering that many of the moderators and administrators share Aristotle's position on the issue that set him off and caused him to go nuts, it's not much of stretch to conclude as to why he gets a "wink, wink, nudge, nudge" free pass on all this crap.

And to top it all off, he posts the contents of a PM in public, out of context, no less, and gets a free pass on that one, tooooo.

He attacked, several times, in several threads, and I stayed quiet. I stayed quiet waiting for the moderators and administrators to do their jobs and enforce the Code of Conduct that we've all agreed to abide by. But that never happened.

If the moderators and administrators were doing their job, I should have never even had the opportunity to call him anything. It should have been over and done with long before that point. But ut wasn't. It was allowed to move forward.

But eventually one will reach the point where they will defend themselves when the moderators and administrators just leave them hanging out to dry, for whatever reason.

I actually had a moderator/administrator try to turn this back on me for failing to hit the "Report This Thread" button and report the offending posts. Yeah, well, I didn't do that, but that doesn't really justify the overwhelming inaction once they did see what all was going on in those posts. The only actions I've seen so far is that the most egregiously Code of Conduct-offending posts (and the threads that contained them) have been disappeared, so that anyone wanting to read back to ascertain what all happened in the context of it all, will not be able to. The bits that are left is a highly skewed representation of the events, highly skewed in favor of one side of the issue, I might add.

I cannot begin to describe to you the bad taste that EO has left in my mouth right now because of the actions, inactions and hypocrisies of some of the moderators, administrators and prominent members of the forum. As you can imagine, I could go on, and on, and on about it. But I won't.

Again, not even a nice try by you and your cronies. I think I'd come up with a better name than using part of mine and part of Jim's, but that's just me. Pathetic?? Indeed this whole thing is.

You messed up....and all you want to do now is deflect that onto someone, ANYONE else. It's pathetic, all right.

Someone from the admin team actually had the audacity to "turn their back" on you? How DARE they....don't they know who you are??
