Thinking Good Thoughts About DaveKC

A while ago in another topic, I forget which one, some drivers including myself talked about the mess that is made when changing oil on our Onan generators. Tight space and a shield near the horizontally-mounted oil filter makes it difficult to remove the filter without spilling oil.

DaveKC shared a tip about punching a hole in the filter to drain the oil from it before removing it. It works. Just loosen the filter before punching the hole so the oil does not make the wrench slip. A second hole will allow air in and speed drain time.

It was a simple tip that was easy to share. Using it makes the oil changes go faster and cleaner. Thank you, DaveKC for sharing the tip.

Thanks for sharing that Phil. It's nice to see how something so simple can actually turn out to be a big help! I've used that technique myself on my personal vehicle and it works great.

This is one of the ways this forum helps folks.. a simple idea shared, that someone else might not have thought of.

That's a good way to avoid some of the mess. In a poorly designed application where there's no room to work and get a wrench over the filter it can be used to get the filter off too by using the screwdriver punched through the filter to unscrew it.

Aw Jim, don't worry about it, mines gone, but, it wasn't worth reading anyway. Just some info for newbees. That they don't wanna read and accept.

This is a new repost after the other one degenerated. We'll keep it civil, or things disapear.

Do I detect a threat? Or, a promise? There is a difference, you know?

DaveKC shared a tip about punching a hole in the filter to drain the oil from it before removing it.

Yes, that's a good trick.

Hey DaveKC... Ever done this one...???

Back in '65 with my first $500 fixer-upper..
(in the years of GAS WARS..!!!)
Couldn't get the oil filter off. :-(

Shop Teacher (I was a junior in High School)
suggested punching a hole in the bottom of the filter to
drain it. Then drive a large screwdriver thru the filter
sideways and use it as a handle to turn
off the very tight filter. It worked..!!! :)

Think it would work today...???
Filters seem more flimsy...
But, today there are better tools for filter removal.

KEEP SMILING..!!! :) :) :) :) :)

Dreamer..Thank you for removing those unneeded posts. I too wish some people would just grow up...This is an innocent thread that for some reason some peoples personal feelings about another got in the way, it got washed out..after all we relish in the fact we are professionals.

Glad someone could use the tip. Feel free to pass it on. There are likely many folks with your generator setup doing it the hard way.
