Think you deserve respect?

It's one thing to bloviate about doing something as stupid as causing an accident, but I can't imagine anyone really doing it.

Stupidity knows no limits. Even smart people do stupid things when good judgment and self control give way to emotions like road rage. Mentally rehearsing the evil deed makes the loss of self control more likely when a rage-inspiring situation develops. A well-balanced and professional driver would maintain control in the same situation and not react with rage.

Intentionally caused accidents are not accidents at all since they are intentional. Intentionally causing an accident with an insurance settlement in mind is a criminal act that may lead to charges of vehicular homicide, reckless driving, assault with a deadly weapon and other charges depending on the state and the result of the intentional deed.

Broadcasting in advance one's intent to commit the evil deed increases the likelihood of an aggressive and successful prosecution.

Deliberately provoking a collision by jamming on the brakes is risky [you could get hurt, too], and just plain stupid, IMO.
It's much more satisfying to tap the cruise speed down until they pass.

That is the proper way to get rid of a tailgater, simply slow down. The tailgater will pass.

Usually, it is a four-wheeler on the phone or impared that settles in behind the truck. Slowing down to get that driver off my tail and out in front of me where I can keep an closer eye on him or her provides a feeling of relief when the safe space around the truck is re-established.

Where speed limits are high, Diane and I generally drive below them in the interests of fuel economy, tire life, etc. Where it is say 55 mph, I usually set the cruise control at 54. It is the easiest and most relaxing way I know to continually shake tailgaters and automatically maintain safe space in front of the truck.

Streak,
Don't mean to be an a** about this but when you ask the question about respect, while using the p*ssing issue, you lost my respect with the setting up of the accident issue. Regardless who say what, this shows a lot of arrogance that is the real problem in this industry with so called professionals truckers - one reason why I consider myself a professional driver and not ever a trucker.

why would someone do anything to harm or ruin another drivers job is be on me maybe you just as bad as those drivers that probably been having to pee for a long time not able to find a safe spot to pull over and pee and if they had known you were watching them they would have used the other side of truck

Exactly. Why would somebody choose to dangerously tailgate another vehicle for miles knowing in a split second something could go wrong causing them to crash into the rearend of the vehicle ahead of them? Their action is a constant risk of harm to another driver! My supposed reaction is a split second risk that by comparison is rarely acted out. It is extremely doubtful I would act out this action but I made my point. The tailgater is taking a HUGE risk that he/she could get that reaction from another driver.

Granted my supposed reaction is very dangerous and not the way to handle it. I value life and our investment to much. But why would one risk finding the one driver that doesn't care to tailgate?

Nowhere in my thread did I say I [Streakn1] was looking for respect. I spoke of a group that has publically asked for it. Instead I pointed out that due to the actions of so many disrespectful drivers out here, those publically crying out that our industry needs to gain more respect in the eyes of the general public, have a long hard hill to climb with many rocks in the way!

Please note that I've added skinny people, etc to the list and urinated in the original post.

Plaza in which I'm speaking of is the Youngstown, OH eastbound side. Six fuel tankers, one dry van, and one waste hauler couldn't seem to find the restroom close by.

I can understand the urge to hit the brakes, but it's really a dangerous thing to do. No more then two months ago a moron close to where I live had his girlfriend and their child in the car. It was a Saturday night and he started riding the bumper of the rig in front of him. The vehicle in front jammed on his breaks.. The child sitting in it's mothers lap was killed.

As for where I stand as a "truck driver" and respect:
I concern myself with gaining the trust and respect of our customers first and foremost. As for the general public I concern myself with safely sharing the road with them and hope they will find my actions as respectable. And finally for the other "truck drivers" out here, share the road safely with me and everyone around us because that is what I'm going to do with you. Respect my space because I'm going to respect yours. And if you choose to endanger my life, that of my wife's and anyone in the immediate area by tailgating, keep this one thought in mind:

If this son of a gun suddenly gets ticked and slams on his/her brakes, will I be able to avoid rearending this vehicle or am I setting myself up for an accident?

I may not be the one to actually pull such a stunt (we all have our bad days) but someone just might! I think BillChaffey just made my point even stronger by showing proof there are "truck drivers" that will react to a tailgater in the very way I've mentioned.
