The Trucker Who Cannot Not Truck

On Friday a friend and former expediter known to many in the Open Forum drove a tractor to get a tire fixed as he prepared to pick up a trailer and head out on the road.

That would be a routine event with most drivers on most days. Not so with this driver on this day. He is Glen Rice, a dear friend of ours who a while back was deemed by the Social Security Administration to be totally and permanently disabled. (Background)

Glen and his wife Jan were severely injured in a horrific car/truck accident in December, 2003. No one believed either one of them would ever drive a truck again. Today I can't believe it myself but Glen is giving it a go.

Last week, Glen was in Indiana to attend his carrier's driver orientation class and get into a truck. Now he is in it and doing the things truckers do.

The Social Security rules allow people who are drawing disability benefits to try working for a while without loosing the benefits. If this does not work out, Glen can return home and still get by.

But that's the thing about Glen Rice. He does not know how to quit. He is not one to let something like a permanently and totally disabled designation stand between him and the effort to recover enough to get back on the road again. A lot of people would not even try to go back to work if they were so designated. Not Glen. He is a trucker that cannot not truck.

His doctor has cleared him to try. He has passed the DOT physical. His safety department knows about his accident, injuries and recovery. They all say it is OK for him to drive a big rig. I'm happy that he is happy to be back in a truck, but I worry too and he knows it.

There is no question that he is in better shape than he has been when we have seen him at other times since the accident. Maybe it's that I don't understand the guy. I've never met anyone with more drive than him. I'm happy for him. I'm worried about him. I am astounded by his recovery and new work. I see it happening but cannot believe he is back in a truck. When I pray for the man, I don't even know what to say.

It's an amazing thing to see Glen in a truck again. Let's hope and pray that it works out for the good.

That is amazing. I believe everyone here at EO wishes him well with his new gig. Way to go Glen!
I hope it works out the way he wants. Once trucking gets in the blood, its hard to get it out.

We also hope it works out and really never thought we would hear of him being able to truck again. We wish him all the best and I hope he enjoys being out here once again as much as we do.

The company he is with should consider themselves lucky to have him!

This is excellent news. I also have nothing but best wishes for success and look forward to hearing more in the future.

Fantasic! When yoiu hear of this type of person, working to overcome what is put in front of him by no doing of his own, it kind of puts each our our own issues in life in a bit of a different perspective.

Congrats to you Glen. I am not one to wish people good luck as i truely believe we all make our own luck, This is a true showing of that, no luck involved here, just a determination by a man who won't give up or give in. My hats off to you!

Glen is such an inspiration to all of us, don't you think. Glen, Shawna and I want to shake your hand personally and hope our pathes will cross.

Glen was kind enough to take my calls and answer questions regarding purchasing the tractor we now own and drive. His input was very graciously given and so appreciated by us. We will be forever thankful for his time. And Glen, if you are ever in need a hand on the road, and we can help, we are there for you.

Just one question though, why a T/T rig rather than a B,C,or D?

Glen does not have a computer on the road at the moment so he does not see the Open Forum or anything else online.

He is a company driver with a non-expedite carrier. The carrier runs big-rigs only. To return to FedEx, he would have to buy a truck. Not knowing how this will work out, that would not be a wise decision to make at this time.

Phil,
Please let him know we are very happy for him, and his success will be in our prayers!

He was always very helpful to me years ago, and was one of the original moderators I remember!

That may be the most ungrammatical thread title ever written, but the news is welcome - thanks to ATeam for posting it.
PS Anyone who gets to Bentz in Ft Wayne can see a great photo layout of the truck that Glen & Janice designed. Definitely a bittersweet read, and I wish them both all happiness now.

Glens posts really influenced me over the years and I know he will do well in anything he chooses to do.
