The Smells of Expediting

No one ever talks about the smells of expediting. When you think about where you have been, are the smells part of the memories?

Ocean breezes

Pine forests

Fuel islands

Wal-Mart

Feed lots

Refineries

Water treatment plants (by the way, its the sewage they treat, the water is just fine).

Truck stop parking lots (urine)

Paint plants

Fork lift exhaust

Cattle haulers

Landromats

Your carrier's office

Swamp gas

Snow

Your work gloves

Dust

Bakeries

Food manufacturing plants

Dumpsters on a hot day

Rain

Truck exhaust

New tires

Florida

Burning brakes

Truck stop showers

Hospitals

Old warehouses

Casinos

Fresh mowed grass

A load of chille pepper we once did

We also did a load of perfume. It came off a plane in Memphis and was grounded when being transfered because an odor was detected. We hauled it the rest of the way to California.

While not an expedite smell, it is a smell of my very early days in trucking. In fact I got my first whiff the day I passed my class A road test. I hauled a load of corrugated boxes from a plant in St. Cloud, MN to Jeno's Frozen Pizza in Duluth, MN. I also had trouble backing into the docks in front of an audience and forgetting to open the trailer doors.

The smell of pizza, vegetables and spices from Jeno's mingled with the odor of cooked wood chips from Super Wood, a chipboard manufacturer and the fragrance of fermented grain spilled along side the docks was unique and not unpleasant.

I also like the smell of ink plants, printing outfits and corrugated box companies.

I don't care for the odor of powered cheese, tires in bulk or fresh painted parts.

Of course nothing beats the smell of a QualCom beep first thing in the morning with a load offer.

A 350-pound co-driver that never showered for 12-days!

Man I am glad that was over 18-months ago and in a different truck with a different carrier.

Now, only a burning memory..........

Everyone can get a bit smelly out here real quick,,,but by the second day this truck is stopping one way or another...Ive gone as far as using the hose on the fuel island to wash up before when I couldnt get near any pilots..Water is water...

Yuck,,,,,,some are just plain nasty

I dont when I will forget the smell of today's load, hauled 2 repo'd tractors, 1 was not in running condition yet apparently it was full of Diesel fuel and leaked out ALL OVER the van body floor.
