The Most Disturbing Personality on Cable Television

First, let me introduce you to the monthly magazine "Commentary" from which I got this article: About Us « Commentary Magazine

About Us

COMMENTARY is America’s premier monthly magazine of opinion and a pivotal voice in American intellectual life. Since its inception in 1945, and increasingly after it emerged as the flagship of neoconservatism in the 1970s, the magazine has been consistently engaged with several large, interrelated questions: the fate of democracy and of democratic ideas in a world threatened by totalitarian ideologies; the state of American and Western security; the future of the Jews, Judaism, and Jewish culture in Israel, the United States, and around the world; and the preservation of high culture in an age of political correctness and the collapse of critical standards.

Many of COMMENTARY’s articles have been controversial, and more than a few have been hugely influential, touchstones for debate and discussion in universities, among policy analysts in and out of government, within the ranks of professionals and community activists of all kinds, and in circles of serious thought worldwide. A large number of articles can be counted as landmarks of American letters and intellectual life. Agree with it or disagree with it, COMMENTARY cannot be ignored. To read it is to take part in the great American discussion.

Secondly, let me introduce you to the author of the story, Mr. Wehner: Peter Wehner « Commentary Magazine

Peter Wehner is a senior fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center. Previously he worked in the administrations of Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, and George W. Bush. In the last of which, he served as deputy assistant to the president.

And now for the article:

The Most Disturbing Personality on Cable Television
Peter Wehner 02.24.2011 - 9:37 AM

In the past few weeks Glenn Beck has spoken about the coming caliphate that he believes is about to envelope most of the world. He then dilated on the anti-Christ with a man who says he has “new prophetic understanding into the end times.” In 2009, this self-proclaimed prophet wrote a column titled “What Obama and the Anti-Christ Have in Common.” Then, on a recent show, the discussion focused on the coming Islamic anti-Christ. And earlier this week, an irate, bellicose Beck spoke about the “perfect storm” America faces. “I can’t honestly believe we’re finally here,” he said in praising his own prescience. In his version of events, Beck is the solitary Voice of Truth willing to expose the New World Order (complete with references to Van Jones and Code Pink).

It’s hard to tell how much of what Beck says is sincere and how much is for show. Whatever the case, and even taking into account the entire MSNBC lineup, Glenn Beck has become the most disturbing personality on cable television. One cannot watch him for any length of time without being struck by his affinity for conspiracies and for portraying himself as the great decoder of events. Political movements are not just wrong; they are infiltrated by a web of malevolent forces. Others see the shadows on the wall; Beck alone sees the men casting them. The danger when one paints the world in such conspiratorial terms is that it devalues the rational side of politics. It encourages a cast of mind that looks to expose enemies rather than to engage in arguments. Few things, after all, are as they appear.

Beyond that, of course, is the sense of impending doom, of the coming Apocalypse, of our world being on the edge of calamity. If taken seriously, this has the effect of creating fear, hopelessness, and feelings of helplessness.

All this is quite troublesome in its own right. But what ought to worry conservatives in particular is that Beck not only has the unusual capacity to discredit virtually every cause he takes up; he also confirms the worst caricatures of the right. What was true before is doubly true today. It looks to me like it’s only a matter of time — and I suspect not much time — until he blows apart professionally. If and when that happens, one can only hope that conservatism as a movement will have created enough distance from Beck to mitigate the damage.

I see the obsession with Beck continues!
If he bothers you sooo much, why waste your time watching, or listening to him?

"It's hard to tell how much of what Beck says is sincere and how much is for show"

I'll bet this same author was also outraged by Jerry Springer and his guests, assuming nothing on that show was staged or scripted. Here's a news flash: for some reason Beck has developed a huge following with this type of schtick. He brings in great ratings for that time slot and makes a lot of money for Fox. When people get tired of this act, we'll see if he's flexible enough to come up with something else. But anybody that watches him enough to take him seriously must surely have too much time on their hands.

I think he feels its his duty to keep everyone informed and to "protect" us from Beck, the ENTERTAINER...

But it is all good, I mean he does get his "news" from some places most never go to....that in itself sayes something....

And then there is the "well informed" stand point...the more info you have , the easier it is to make desicion....but then Beck doesn't have much of an affect on my life, well not that I know of....:)

Most of those types of articles are jealousy pieces. They are made because they can't get the same ratings, Same deal with Limbaugh years ago. Notice he is still around and raking in a pile of cash.

So, Mr. Wehner is jealous of Beck's ratings? How does Beck's ratings effect Mr. Wehner and why would he care? Did you read Mr. Wehner's bio?

Conservatives are, and should be concerned about Beck's antics, because it just may get Pres. Obama another 4 years. I think Mr. Wehner sums it all up in these two sentences.

All this is quite troublesome in its own right. But what ought to worry conservatives in particular is that Beck not only has the unusual capacity to discredit virtually every cause he takes up; he also confirms the worst caricatures of the right.

I wonder, do liberals know what an OFF BUTTON is used for? When I don't like something, I turn it off!! Decided whether or not I like something seldom takes more than 4 or 5 minutes. It has NEVER taken years. Strange concept. Complain about Beck (or insert any other entertainer that you don't like) daily, watch him daily and continue to watch just so you have more to complain about. TRY THE OFF BUTTON!! It will free you up to do more than watch TV and complain about it all the time!! :p

If Beck is going to continue to rumble around your head this way, I'd consider charging rent......no one should live rent-free for this long and get away with it.

OH WAIT!!! Maybe Witness23 IS Beck. He comes in here, rags on himself, makes us want to go watch his show to see what he is ranting about!! SNEAKY!!! :p

OR

Beck will, for some reason, go off the air. Witness23 will then retreat into the desert in a deep depression. He will have lost his sole purpose in life.

I am often accused of being a Glenn Beck fan because of my views which I openly express. This, to me, is funny because I have honestly never seen his show. I am aware only that he is some guy on Fox news.

I randomly happened across his radio show on an AM station a few days ago as I was driving across Kentucky. He didn't sound too over the top to me, but then I only got about 40 minutes worth until the station faded off into the distance.

The really funny thing is that liberals like to throw his name around as if all conservatives couldn't have possibly arrived at their own conclusions without listening to Beck or maybe Limbaugh or O'reilly.

Even funnier is that it is the liberals themselves who just spout idiotic slogans and have little or no actual knowledge about the political flavor of the day.

I do listen to Larry Elder and Neil Boortz. I like Herman Cain for the next president of the United States.

I can't stand Hannity... too repetitive.

Most disturbing TV personality? .... that's a tough one.

Beck is certainly not the most disturbing. It takes a real PRO (Pelosi/Reid/Obama) to be most disturbing. Beck is possibly the most annoying though.

So was this posted as a news article, or was there another motive for the post? Do you want a debate about Beck?

I would contend that the most divisive person in the US today is the President.

Your right on that but I get so annoyed when trying to listen to Beck I shut him off. I don't even try to watch him anymore and that goes for that numb nut in Washington as well.

You are correct and it IS by design. His plan is to divide the Nation so he can tear it apart and rebuild it in his sick, socialist plan with him as benevolent dictator or the first king of the United Soviet Socialist States of America.

Don't you mean ...

Your right ... but I get so annoyed when I try to listen to Beck as he rambles and rambles on about something I already know, I have to change the channel - NPR all things considered seems to be a relief. I don't even try to watch him anymore, I have gotten a fear of chalk boards and people with a piece of chalk in their hands AND the same goes for that all the numb nuts in Washington as well.
