I can't chime in on either side, I am too busy sitting in the corner. (the chairs suck)

Me too! Though I saw it on Facebook in a group, posted by someone who typically fact checks so I ASSumed they were on top of it! Assumptions are the mother of all *bleep* ups!
Now scoot over I'm falling off the chair! :p

It's satire, like the Onion. The article was designed to get the exact knee-jerk response it got here.

I guess they missed the warning "The National Review is not intended for readers under 18 years of age."
Imagine that: they thought adults would question what they read, lol.

It's a satire site, but it's not straight satire, it's satire with a specific political bent and agenda, specifically to foster certain stereotypical beliefs and knee jerk reactions. You know, like Fox News.

One way to tell if an author is pulling your titties or yanking your weenie through satire is to carefully read the entire piece and look for key words and sentences. The article below starts out somewhat believable. The first paragraph is designed to get any Red-Blooded American's red blood flowing, heart rate elevated, temple veins protruding and the onset of tunnel vision.

The small town of Jerome Illinois made big news this week when they announced plans to celebrate Muslim Appreciation Month in exceptional fashion. Students at Westhills Middle School will get a taste of Islamic living during November as the school gears up to expand children’s understanding and tolerance of Islam.

Reading the next paragraph it should become obvious that the author is having some fun at your expense. But, if the bio-chemistry thing going on in your head still has you seeing red, you might have missed it. I took the liberty to highlight (red) a few key words and passages I found helpful in detecting that my weenie had been pulled.

The middle school, which teaches grades 6th through 8th, houses roughly 300 students during its nine month school year. Each day of November curriculum will start with a prayer to Allah.

Prayer in a public school? I don't think so! Not to Allah, Joe Biden, The "Big G" or Jesus Martinez.

Children will then repeat an Islamic pledge of allegiance to Afghanistan’s flag.
Studies will include Arabic reading and writing, Islamic history and Qumran study to name a few.

An Islamic pledge of allegiance to Afghanistan's flag? The author tipped her hand with that one, right?

Traditional Islamic meals will also be served in the cafeteria. The month-long celebration will culminate in a two-hour school play about the life and teachings of the prophet Mohammed.

Parents will be required to purchase new school uniforms; Abayas for the girls and Thobes for boys. Failure to partake in the month’s activities will lead to a failing mark and the child being forced to take the grade over.

Still believe this article is serious? Uniforms in public schools? If this piece was for real, there would be a disclaimer stating that the school would supply abayas and thobes for families that couldn't afford to buy their own. Also students no longer get failing marks or are forced to take a grade over. That would have a negative impact on the dear one's self esteem.

In a phone conversation, school principal Mohammed Ishir told me:

A much better name than Fred Peterson.

“I have been seeing a disturbing trend in the conservative news media when it comes to racism against Muslims. There is simply too much prejudice in today’s western culture. All I know to do is to reach out to the children. I hope by showing them the true meaning of this peaceful religion I can bring acceptance to future generations.”

I applaud Ishir and his school for their bold step into a progressive new future. A future where all individuals who have claimed to be God are respected and revered on an equal pedestal.

There’s no need to have winners. Not when you have peace.

For me it was the last line of the very first paragraph:

"...the school gears up to expand children’s understanding and tolerance of Islam."

Public schools don't do that for any religion, not even Christianity.
The ones you redlighted also tugged at mine, but one you didn't highlight did also:

"There is simply too much prejudice in today’s western culture."

That's a sentence spoken from the perspective on an outsider, not someone who lives here. It's also an oxymoron if it was spoken by a Muslim, since a Mulsim, according to the Qur'an, cannot denounce "western culture" and denounce "prejudice" (advocate tolerance) at the same time.

Genius though you are, Rags, sometimes it's best to let people use their imagination - it's good for them. ;)
