the idle rich

I always thought the term idle rich referred to the Hollywood elite, the River Oaks heirs, the foreign royalty and others of that sort. Now I realize it's my fellow drivers. I'm sitting near Greenville, SC. It's overcast so the sun isn't shining directly on anyone. The current temp is 75. I have my windows open and my ceiling fan set to outgoing so it's making a nice breeze. It's very comfortable in here. Turns out the idle rich are the guys parked all around me idling their trucks when there's no need.

The various companies for the most part since they are big company big rigs although there is one D unit that's an O/O. I talked to him for a few minutes.

Last time I counted idling trucks (yes I was bored and needed the excersize), out of 125 trucks, 90% of the trucks were idling in 65 degree weather. Out of the 10% left, 5% had APUs and the other 5% (including me) just had the windows open.

It puzzles me to no end why someone would boast that they have not shut their truck off except for PM but it has happened a bunch of times.

I don't even run my APU if I don't have to. Today it has only run when it's done one of it's 20 minute battery charging cycles. I dress for the weather and can open or close the windows as needed. I have no idea how much I've saved but I know it's a LOT.

What I will usually find is the ones that sit there and idle all day in perfect weather, are the same bunch that cry and say they can't afford to drive 50 miles to pick up a load.
That is usually followed by blaming the carrier because they sent them a bad load.

you know I was just reading the California anti-idle/anti-apu information and it really is something else.

Someone with 2007 truck with any apu will not be certified for use in California but my 1999 with a 2002 apu will be AND if I retrofit my truck/apu/reefer with a Diesel Particle Filter and catalyst with controls, my truck can be used through the 2010 but the 2007 can't be used with existing apus - talk about a mess.

It is sad that we have to go through all of this with the trucking industry when there is some unconfirmed science that we have to believe over an estimated 2500 deaths from diesel particles. I think there may be more deaths from Peanut allergies than diesel particles.

Good point. There is some interesting reading in the latest Landline with these new CARB regulations.

I saw that, actually it is right here (holding up the magazine to the screen:p )

I thought I saw somewhere in my internet wanderings a site or organization that actually compares APUs and tests them, does anyone know of a site or organization?

I know there was one that talks about the loans and grants to get an APU on a truck but I can't find that now either.

The reason I am asking is I counted over 60 companies offering APUs of some sort and it is more or less who has the flashier website or ad that seems to be selling them.

Leo,
Your post about the idle rich bothers me BAD< BAD< BAD!

In the Greenville,SC area, you could have turned your fan off-- called me and lived like a king for the rest of the week!

Think about a change of pace next time you're in the area!

Pappy :)

I didn't mean to get you riled up. I was just commenting about how much fuel is being wasted idling here at this one small truckstop and tried to make a pun out of it. I bet in 24 hours enough was idled away to completely fill my tanks more than once.

Rlent, Thanks but been there. There is another site with a lot of details of who is doing what and how to even get into the grant program to get a new engine when they start that.
