Expedite Expo The Buzz 1: Expedite Expo

The roundtable lost its momentum when the moderator left. A lot of the attendees were not experienced. If someone had then prompted the audience to ask about topics that interested them the members could have offered responses to start discussions. It only lacked structure not attendees. The room was full for quite awhile. Your morning session had an obvious flow to it and you and nick kept it smooth and to the point, allowing questions as it went. For my first EXPO I thought it went well and I've conducted hundreds of sessions like it in the auction and real estate industries nationwide.

Yes I did see you in the corner but not outside. I'm sure we will meat down the road.
As for the class I left early something about hearing the same thing the hundreth time. No newbies were asking questions and no one were priming them to ask. There were new people in the crowd but I think they were overwhelmed by everything and didn't know what to ask.

So what could we have done to get them to ask questions? Would it have been possible for those who'd heard it all a hundred times to redirect the discussion onto new subjects? Should one of our questions next year be: what was your most valued lesson learned?

If the moderator leaves the show, there needs to be a back up. The audience could have been asked lead questions for responses and then go from there by the rest of the talented panel. Each one could have been given a topic to briefly give their view on and the audience encouraged to participate. How to pick an owner? What to expect on the road? What should the driver be responsible for vs the owner. How to schedule your time. How to deal with angry customers. How to pick a load. What is acceptable deadhead and relocation to you and the owner. Yadayadayada

Um ... I don't know if I should even add to the discussion.

BUT I will.

The moderator shouldn't have left, it is their job to keep things moving even when it gets rather boring, even if they have to do card tricks or something. Them leaving showed others no one was interested in going on.

A good way to fix these issues is to have a little cheatsheet of sorts with subject material listed for those on the panel. Keeping a "schedule" of sorts is a good thing. For those who understand when I say you can't moderate a meeting without a schedule, the same holds true for many types of panel discussions and presentations. We have one of the greatest sources anyone can ever ask for right here, grabbing threads for discussion about basic subjects may be a great start.

We, experienced people in this 'business' tend to forget what it is like to be a newbie and what answers we should be looking for.

You bring up very good points and from what I hear this was a very quiet group which is the opposite it has been for the past two years. Usually by Saturday everyone has tons of questions and it is hard to get everyone to slow down for a minute. Next year I will have index cards with bullet points of questions we have been asked by newbies as well as experienced drivers to hand out to the panel.

Your feedback is very much appreciated Thank You! All of us working together will keep making the workshops and the event better and better.
