the art of sitting still

Waiting has been the hardest part for us to get use to also. I like to get puzzle books and work them. It helps keep the mind sharp, kills time and can be stopped at any point if you get a load. On the weekends when we're likely to sit till Monday, we try to see some sights...take advantage of what others wish they could see. Take pics so you can share with family!

WALLYTRUCKER, does the company come out and set it up in your vehicle or do you just take the box and connect it your self in the vehicle,

I can't understand how a DR unit can sit for 40 hrs and only get 1 load offer. being located in charlotte nc I thought this would be a good location. a offer that only pays 1.16 a mile for a DR unit is not a offer worth taking, or am I wrong? there is no art to this, maybe its because im running solo for the next 2 weeks, who knows, but being only 2hrs from home????? maybe i should stick it out.I can find things to stay busy, but wondering about freight, or is FECC is slowing for the season. at least my trk will be clean.

just enjoying what I do and
doing what I enjoy.

All good ideas. I appreciate all the response. My laptop bit the dust just after I posted and my new one just got here today. I do have TV and VCP (older truck, older technology) and I do play alot of online poker. I can fill most of my time but when I hit the 24 to 48 hour mark I start losing it big time. Anyway, I will try some of the things mentioned that I haven't been doing. The APU is still a question mark.

Oh and I bought new batteries this week Hawk, thanks for the jump !!

One good way to pass some downtime, is reading magazines on a subject of interest to you. OOIDA's Landline is a given, and you can find mags devoted to every subject there is. A subscription isn't too expensive, you can toss them in your truck for reading later when you collect your mail, (I put mine in the backpack for my laptop), and then you can spend some time catching up, while hangin out. Alternate with out & about activity, (even just walking around), and time flies, instead of dragging. :)

Playing a cool game on the puter... Civilization3. Talk about wasted HOURS and HOURS! Oh well... gives me that false sense of accomplishment I need, right after getting the real sense of accomplishment after I drop an all nighter. LOL

I bought Civ IV months ago only to find out my comp wouldn't support the video. But my new one does..... just got started on it last night. I had played before and knew it was a great time waster and it is.

After 22 years in this business, you'd think sitting would be easy, but believe me, it still sucks, can I say sucks?
I found if you plan to do something, dispatch will call, like lighting a cigarette, your meal comes.
There is no easy way to pass the time, you can only polish your truck so many times.
My downfall now is Derby Owners Club, you know the horse race game in the truckstops, some say it's truck driver crack,it will let you spend all your hard earned money, the better you get the more you race, the more you spend,in fact right now I'm in an 90 dollar a day motel here in Los Angeles, still cheaper than if I go to TA in Ontario, both truckstops have game.
Ohio State beats Indiana this morning, then going clean truck, that will keep us busy today,Nascar race tomorrow, that will keep busy tomorrow

i had the same problem i don't sit well
some of the things i did, sold mary kay, lap tops , pc. gensets field rep for proheat, mason shoes, windshield heater , for window wiper, mirrors for trucks and cars, new and used trucks, and a few other things
looked at each layover as a business opp and did ok,
now that i run local don't have time for sidelines like when i was on the road
running local is hard work

and the last year i ran over the road sold 12 used truck and 6 new ones and 202 genset and found 40 dealers for proheat and that was while waiting for the next run to come a long

and what other said is good to

Good Evening (Or should I say After Noon)

I hate sitting as well, However So Im told Patience is a virture By the Bosses other lead driver. (If you want the big ones ya got to wait).

Sounds like good advice, but I hate it as well. So when I am sitting I post on here like now. Earlier this AM I posted and low and behold I got my answer through the ya know what. Hmmm

No big deal.

I don't Like the FSC any way as it cuts into MY Monie as Idon't get my CUT till the FSC is Taken out. GRRRR

I am bored to tears and yup I am waiten to go pick up my load. So this is what I've found to do to pass my time. Besides Calling the CC and saying hey remember me, Then after Im asked how ya doing today and then stating it could be better or it could be worse to the person, indicating,(Worse I could be sitting in the desert Eating MRE's HG)
Or Better I could be on the Big Run to California or Nevada or Oregon or Washington State, Texas, Ohio I think you get the Picture.
Then asking whats it look like for this area or that.
After I talk to the person whom alaways knows whats going on I feel more at ease.

What else do I do, well wiping down and work on the Truck, and Trailer. if its nice keeps me pre-ocupied. I also go running and work out.

I'm realy not much for watching movies or playing games on the computer.

Reading other peoples gripes and complaints is ok but realy this is not my cup of tea I'd rather be on a run leaving my CC alone.
Making the monie so I can afford to go home.

If this comes to a surprise to any of you, as of some of the posts I have made then you surely you don't know.

Since I was knee high to a bean pole I wanted to Drive Truck now after Retiring from the Service of 23 Im doing just that.

I was LUCKY I was Hand picked by my first Boss to work with him and he trained me So Wayne again my Hats off to ya.

So as you have it now this is what I do.

If I tend to ask a Question and it offends ya then simply send me a
e-mail [email protected].
As I said so many times while in the service there is never a dumb question, so feel free to ask. A team is only as strong as its weakest member and please don't you ever forget this.

Oh ya sorry for rambling Im all in support of An APU or Generator set of your Choice is I believe its a smart move a very smart move. Makes the truck just about like a room in a hotel only cheaper.

Nope Im not a Super Trucker (But maybe one day Ill be fortunite to try that once or twice and to able to least say yup I did it.

Have a Safe One
