Better ice fishing in Cleveland than Miami. ANY wimp can live where it is WARM, it takes GUTS, STAMINA and BRAINS to survive in the cold!! :p Any fool can lay around on the beach in the heat, baking and getting skin cancer!! (I know, this ain't funny either)
And this coming from a Michiganite...another wimp state! except for the upper half..
Try SD in January if ya want cold!...

Better ice fishing surely ....... but not necessarily better fishing ...

ANY wimp can live where it is WARM, it takes GUTS, STAMINA and BRAINS to survive in the cold!!
Not necessarily  ..... in some ways, warmer climates can be more difficult to live in, owing to the heat (desert environments, drought conditions) and often, the higher prevalence of various forms of disease and pestilence .....

Spend a summer out in the bush in Sub-Saharan Africa - some place like say, oh ..... Angola, Sudan, Ethiopia, Chad, or Somalia ....

While you're there - and after you've finished beating your chest and telling everyone how tough it is live where it's a bit chilly and how it requires being a "real man" to survive - please explain to any poor Dinka, Nuer, or Somali subsistence farmer/herdsman you encounter, how they have it so easy .... and that any wimp could live there ...

While you are at it, maybe you could also explain to them how that 3 foot long Guinea Worm that is erupting out of their 10 year-old daughter's leg, or the River Blindness that caused their wife to lose her sight at age 35, or the Sleeping Sickness that his 5 year-old son got from the tsetse fly that bit him, and which will eventually kill him, are just mere figments of his imagination ....

Any fool can lay around on the beach in the heat, baking and getting skin cancer!!
Yeah, well ...... it is also true that any fool can come into the Soapbox and shoot their mouth off ....

Congrats on being today's candidate .....

NOT into fun at all are you? Not surprising. Fishing is GREAT off Cleveland and only FAIR off Miami. Miami, and the entire east coast of Florida, is GREATLY over fished. Both commercial AND sport fishing. Besides Ice fishing is COOLER than soft water fishing.

You win the SHOOT off!! :p

Do you EVER laugh?

I would be willing to bet that you think that hollow plastic decoys are as good as "Toledo Decoys". Too bad. Do you REALLY think that I was being serious? Kinda weird if you did.
Must have read too many books, eh? :D

I really doubt that you could ever fit in with the bunch I hunt and fish with. MOST of them are UAW guys, LOVE Clinton and voted for Obama. You STILL would NEVER fit in. THEY HAVE FUN!!

"ANY wimp can live where it is WARM, it takes GUTS, STAMINA and BRAINS to survive in the cold!!"

Even taking into account that living conditions are equally well in Michigan (cold) and Miami (hot), without having the extreme problems that can be found in the extreme environments of above the Arctic Circle or out in the bush in Sub-Saharan Africa, it's still tougher to living in south Florida than Michigan.

Michigan has squirrels and rabbits everywhere. Don't have to look hard to find them. They have those in Florida, too, just everywhere, only down there they don't call them rabbits and squirrels, they call them alligators and Burmese pythons. And you don't have to look hard to find them, either.

And while the fishing off Cleveland may be great, you still aren't very likely to have an eagle ray jump up out of the water and into your boat and stab you in the heart like you are off Miami.

When you go into the water off Cleveland, you're just another thing in the water. When you go into the water off Miami, you're lunch.

It's tough down there, I'm tellin' ya. :D

OH YEAH!!!???!! Just ask Jimmy Carter just how dangerous swimming rabbits are!! Alligators ain't squat compared to water fleas!!

I fish Lake Erie AND the Gulf Stream off Miami about the same amount of time. Miami is EASY!! Never have to worry about frost bite there!!! The ONLY REAL worry fishing off Miami is the New York loud mouths that book space on the head boats!!

I did live down there for 10 months and fought fires there too. It was sorta dangerous. NOT NEARLY as dangerous as Detroit is!!

LOL!! I cannot imagine that ANYONE would take what I said in a serious way!! (glad you got it!)

OMG we have it so hard here in southeast Michigan it is like southern California some winters. I don't remember it being so hard in my adult life except in I think 1978 when we got dumped on with record snow.

I don't remember the winter of my childhood happening in the last 20 years, where we could count on a white Christmas and the slogan on the plats actually said "winter wonderland".

Ice fishing? should be outlawed with all the idiots who go out there after a thaw and drown, it seems reasonable to me for the children's sake.

OH BOY there you go another reason we need to bring back DDT, tsetse flies.

Ice dangerous? Only for younger stupid city types. We grew up knowing what a pressure crack is and what direction the winds were blowing. IF you know those two things every thing is hunky dory.

Just how many ice fishermen/women are drowned ice fishing in Michigan? Bet the number is VERY low. More killed doing dope in Detroit weekly than are drowned ice fishing in a season in Michigan.

DDT is not needed on the ice. You don't want to kill your maggots.

True to a point, not everyone thinks like you. I remember some idiots up in Algonac a while ago who claimed the same thing, they grew up on the ice, yada yada yada but seemed to forget that after a weeks worth of 60 degree weather and a good wet and warm rain there may be some danger to going out there. A big deal was made about those few who were floating with the ice that broke off into the lake, I would have left them there but alas I could not make that decision.

Then there were the idiots who drive their truck out on the lake with their shanty, got the shanty setup, move the truck to a "safe" location about 300 feet into the lake then started to bore the hole and forgot about the truck ... and they thought someone stolen the POS. It went through the ice and they didn't even figure it out.

I understand that point but the thing is when they do go and get their a**es in trouble, it takes a lot of people to get out there to rescue them, I think the last time I heard the cost it was about $200k. The od 'victims' take I think less than $5k and that may be with a burial.

OH yeah that's right, you need the flies for bait. Can't you just bait the fish with corn?

Those people ENJOY going out and rescuing people. They train al year and can't wait to practice what they train for. That rescues mainly take place on the big lakes ONLY. VERY few on inland lakes. Again. knowing what a pressure crack is, wind directions etc IS IMPORTANT!!

Maggots are NOT flies. They are larvie. (sp?) You don't ice fish with flies, at least not for the most part. Some use "Joe's flies" or ice flies but most ice fishing is done with live maggots, minnows or lures.

Yeah, it might cost a bit for a Great Lakes ice rescue (they pay those people even IF they are not doing a rescue and other than fuel the equipment is paid for either way) but NOT as much as they pay to clean up the mess that drug use causes in Detroit every week. I bet they spend more in a week on drug junk than they spend in a year doing ice rescues.

EVERYONE that does illegal street drugs does so by CHOICE. Just as stupid a choice as fishing unsafe ice. Only there are FAR MORE of them than there is stupid ice fishermen. Stupid is stupid no matter what stupid action they may chose.

NOT into fun at all are you? Not surprising.
I'm quite into fun and games (as evidenced by my original post in this thread) .... but my idea of fun might be considerably different than yours ....

I might even be having fun right now ....

Fishing is GREAT off Cleveland and only FAIR off Miami. Miami, and the entire east coast of Florida, is GREATLY over fished. Both commercial AND sport fishing.
Please keep in mind that you are speaking to someone who was both a resident of Florida for a number of years ..... and a commercial fisherman - trawling for groundfish in the Pacific Ocean/Gulf of Alaska/Bering Sea ... and the longline swordfish/tuna fisheries in the Gulf of Mexico/Atlantic Ocean/Grand Banks ......

Spend alot of time down there in the Sunshine State do ya ?

One thing is for sure - you won't be catching any of these in Erie right off Browns stadium:

mahi_mahi_pyw6.gif

BTW, they are very good when ya grill 'em over charcoal on the rear deck within a couple of minutes of bringing 'em in .....

And it's alot less likely that they have been swimming around in water so saturated with fecal coliform bacteria that the local beaches have been closed:

Swimming in the Great Lakes

Here's similar data for the Florida waters in comparison:

Florida Beach Water Quality

Dunno about you, but I'm not exactly a big fan of of consuming poo .... or things that have been swimming around in it ...

Besides Ice fishing is COOLER than soft water fishing.
Most of the waters I've fished in were usually somewhat hard, not soft ....

Do you EVER laugh?
Quite often - but like yourself, I'm quite capable of being serious about things as well .... I also tend to laugh when things are funny (IMO) .... but not so much when they aren't ....

I would be willing to bet that you think that hollow plastic decoys are as good as "Toledo Decoys". Too bad.
That's pretty funny - coming from a guy who probably thinks a "cod end" is what ya have ...... after ya trim the tail off a codfish ....

Or that a "snood" ...... is some type of puzzle .... or something a woman wears on her head ....

Do you REALLY think that I was being serious? Kinda weird if you did
I don't take too much of what you have to say too seriously at all ....

Must have read too many books, eh?
Yeah, well ..... you just remember this:

You're the one that's taking your truck into "an expert" to have the cooling system fixed ..... and I'm the one who, after having read the book, is actually working on his and has grease under his fingernails ...

"Book" that one Dano ..... :p

I really doubt that you could ever fit in with the bunch I hunt and fish with.
Well, ya never know layout ..... invite me up some time and find out .... ball is in your court ....

Or better yet - come on down and help me get rid of some of these four legged rats that invariably browse on our rhododendrons and arborvitae over the winter ...

MOST of them are UAW guys, LOVE Clinton and voted for Obama. You STILL would NEVER fit in.
Given those criteria (UAW/Clinton/Obama) that's for sure - yup, I wouldn't "fit in" .....

But then I've never had much interest in "fitting in" .... not my thing .... I'd much rather stand out instead .....

THEY HAVE FUN!!
One can only imagine .....

Hey RLENT, I DID invite you up for a layout hunt, you did not want to come. Most likely would have been just too much fun for you! :p

I would LOVE to take out a few of your deer but it is not worth the cost of a license. I have more venison than I know what to do with anyway.

Nice dolphin. I use to fish for them all the time when I worked on a charter off Ocean City, MD. They are a BLAST to catch!!

NO trout off Miami (don't give me grief over the "sea trout" those fish are NOT members of the trout family) No walleye, no steelhead, no perch. Dolphin numbers, sailfish numbers, groupers, grunts, yellow tails etc are ALL down off Miami. Even the charter captains I fish with down there say the same thing. The yellow jacks are still doing good in the Bay.

Have not fished down there this year. No runs took me down there. I spend more time fishing in the glades these days anyway. Far less expensive and more fish.

Man, if you think "you look like a dork" and "Ol' Chap", or even "Man" are name calling, you've got the thinnest skin on the planet. That, or you're never really been called a name. Are you a product of helicopter parents and "time outs"? Have you never played Dodge Ball? Did you get a Little League trophy just for participating? Did you play musical chairs with the same number of chairs as people? Do you have the heartbreak of psoriasis?

I started reading the thread and came upon this Turtle. I haven't read the rest of the thread so maybe you figured out that I was joking and apologized, maybe, but I doubt it.

So here it is, if you think attacking me is going to make you look better in the eyes of the majority in here, balance it out, if you will, have at it. How you took what I said in a negative light and not the joking manner in which it was obsviously intended is beyond me. Didn't you see the "smiley" emoticon? Which I hate using emoticons (or whatever they are called) but in this instance I used it to make sure there was not doubt that I was joking about the "ole chap" comment. Which, when you first used it, I actually liked it!

You know what it doesn't matter, actually you have enabled me to segue into changing my logo. Thanks Turtle
