With 43M on welfare and climbing, I think some have pretty much given up on the "American dream".
Let's be clear as mud on that 43M figure that is being tossed around.
When people talk about those who are considered to be "ON" welfare. They are generally talking about people who are fully supported by SSI, Medicaid and Food Stamps.
It has now been popularized by the pundits to single out the highest figure among the different programs which is Food Stamps and use that to represent the number of Americans on welfare.

Total number of Americans on food stamps 46,700,000
Total number of Americans on unemployment insurance 5,600,000
Percent of the US population on welfare 4.1 %

Note that the percent of the population on welfare is 4.1%.
Important to note that working people can receive food stamps. They haven't necessarily "given up" they are just low wage earners.
A family of 3 is eligible at a gross income of 24k per year.
Not trying to be overly pedantic here just inserting some perspective.
