Hello all, I've read that there's a select few people that have been wondering about me.

Some of you know that I went to drive for Swift after Hurricane Katrina stole my Biloxi and New Orleans tour bus work - before that I dabbled in expediting and talking and non-talking freight.

Well, I'm not with Swift anymore. I handed them the keys and they didn't even say have a good day - really Really made me feel like just another number, as if I didn't feel like one already.

Swift was good driving experience, not much more than that.
I learned that a big company like Swift really does not care.

While I could have changed terminals, or driver managers...
Here's the way I see it: if a company valued me as a driver, if they wanted to impress me, and keep me - then, New guy or not, they would have shown me the miles and more respect.

Now, before you start thinkin' it was my fault and that I did something wrong, well - I guess I did, like when the truck AC broke down and I sat for 17 hours, then waited another 22 hours for a load.
On average I'd wait for 8 to 12 hours for my next load.
I never wrecked the truck, I never delivered late, I took care of the customer and the equipment.

I bumped into my old boss from the tour bus co. I ran for while I was at the SC terminal. He's let go of 2 busses, so he's down to 3 busses. He's runnin' a diesel shop outa the bus garage that's really starting to thrive - it was just gettin' started in Oct. when I left him. He's got some private coach work he does for another bus co., and said he'd love to have me back. When I informed him I didn't have a place to stay and he didn't have benefits, he said he's workin' on benefits 'cause he's got 2 girls workin' in the office now and he's got 2 FT guys in the bus garage now.
He also told me he'd help me find a place to stay.

Now, I'm one to look at the big picture of things...

Swift is 300 and 400 miling me to death, making me wait for ever to get a load, with Swift I'd have to search for an MT (Empty) trlr all over town sometimes - before I could go to the shipper.
Swift is payin' the same rate for all miles .26 cpm.

Yes, if I stuck it out another 2 months, I'd be gettin' .32 cpm.
and at one year, I'd be gettin' .34 cpm.

Bus Company was/is givin' me 2,000+ miles a week,
at .32 cpm to start. I don't sleep in a 72" box with a TV that gets 3 stations, maybe 4 stations if I have the aluminum foil just right.
I have private coach work available to me atleast once or twice a month that pays $185 a day to me - and on average it's 3 to 5 days or more. Either way, I sleep in a hotel room that I never have to pay for -which means no waiting for showers, no more drying off after showers with a bleached shop rag for a towel.

.26 cpm with no promise of miles, getting bounced all over and waiting long periods of time between loads- you think that's gonna change once they give me a raise?

OR...
.32 loaded miles, .15 empty/deadhead, paid hotels, paid meals?
plus there's the occasional $185 a day gig I got -
figure 3 to 4 days sets me right for a week or two at that rate.
Even on a slow week, I'd clear 500.

Lesson learned:
Sometimes grass isn't always greener on the other side.

I'm goin' back to busses. For now.
Boss man in SC has been talkin' about gettin' a rig, but he's still not sure - no matter to me, so long as he's got the bus work... and he does.

Plan B in case that falls thru...
Well, there's 3 other bus co.'s in upstate SC that'll take me.

Swift is a good co. to get your start with a Class A.
However, there's one thing I've learned over time workin' for big co.'s - your just a number - easily replaced.

I had a nice truck, it had AC problems twice, but other than that - all was fine with the truck.
I did my job as was asked, I went above and beyond the call of duty, and I still got the shaft.
Once again, the non-talkin' freight biz has let me down.
I'll get back into it someday,
going O/O in 2007 is not out of the question for me.

40,000 miles after goin' solo in an 18 wheeler,
I'm back to tour bus work.
Watch out Washington DC and New York City... Big Bus Bob is back!

Tell you boss to look into employee leasing companies to help get benefits for employees . I worked for 2 small companies that used SkillStaff out of AL . Your boss would have complete control over the employees but for tax purposes you work for the leasing company . It's like leasing a truck except they lease people . That pools hundreds , probably thousands of employees to get the numbers for lower priced health insurance , 401K , etc .

I'm curious if the co. you speak of is called STI... they run tractor trailers and straight trucks.

Upon my experiences with various size trucks and sleepers...
I've made my mind up - I'm not goin' in anything that doesn't have a stand-up sleeper, preferably with a walk-thru to the bunk like the Columbia's and KW T2000's have. As far as engines, I like my Detroits, or a nice big Cat. Sorry, not much for the Mercedes or Cummins engines. I would consider an OTR job again if I was guaranteed hometime and miles.
I think my next venture into the OTR freight business will be in a truck with a custom sleeper - again.
Only hopefully the pay will be better. And hopefully I'll own the rig, so if they pay is bad I'll only have myself to blame. Smile!

And yes Brian, I made it to the show; and even though I made it there Fri. AM instead of Thurs. AM like I had wanted to - I was very glad to have made it there.

Regarding the insurance, I will certainly tell my boss about that employee leasing thing - sounds very interesting.

I'm doin' better, Swift really has good mechanics and shops - they really impresses me there. However, their dispatch system is lacking attention to the driver though. With so many trucks going so many places... it really takes away "attention to drivers".
The truck is a tool, the driver is almost looked at as an engine part so to speak... or a part of the tool - instead of a person with a brain, your looked to as an object.

2007 will see me looking at non-talking freight opportunities again though, as I would like to get back into it - just a matter of finding the right outfit for me.
Something I think we all know is not an easy task.

By the way, how are Terry and Rene' doing?
I signed the card at the show for Rene and was curious.

No Bob, it's not STI. However idid work for them also just long enough to figure out that a number of people in the office did'nt seem to even know why they were at work.
The company I'm with has NEW Columbia freightliners with most of the whistles and bells.

test drive opportunity.

just got off the phone with a h/w team who drive for swift. they will be in town this weekend and he said i can try out his volvo coool!!!

she is going to stop driving so he is going solo. swift they say is pushing them too many hours and they can never get enough sleep to drive safely. swift offered a little larger truck but he says even with an alaskan condo it would be too noisy and jarring to get the rest the dot expects. he likes his dm but the otr is too much. he would prefer the 5 state area and be home weekends.

maybe, maybe.....well we will see.

Teams are the Bread and Butter

In the earlier days of trucking and transport... many operations were solo... though many have forgotten those days because teams have taken over so much... and now these large trucking co.'s like Swift have gone to the whole driver/trainer thing; they've made a cycle so to speak... drive a truck... train a driver... and while you train them convince them that training is the way to go... and after a year if you're good you too can drive a truck and train. Sure you make money, but you don't know what kinda driver you're gonna get next and/or how trustworthy they're gonna be.
Solo's starve, they tell you you'll make money - but it depends on the DM *Driver Manager you get, you'll only make as much money as these dispatchers want you to make. They give you nice equipment... because they want you to atleast be comfortably rested while they starve you - so when they decide to give you a run at 3pm, and it's gotta run 700 miles by morning you'll be well rested - hopefully. Then you can get 300 miled to death while they sift thru their teams and when they run outa teams you get another sweet run - usually once every 3 or 4 weeks.

Swift is a decent company if your a driver that wants to train, or a driver that's willing to run team - other than that, I don't have all that much nice to say about them... and after being a solo driver there, and talking with numerous other solo drivers there - what I say I can say with conviction - because there are Very Few Solo Drivers that have been there more than a year or two. Most go on to other co.'s, usually smaller operations - with just as good equipment, and co.'s that offer you much more respect as a professional driver.

Their equipment is nice, no doubt; but you can have the biggest engine, and the best sleeper on the earth - but what good is that if you don't have the respect, the miles, and the hometime that you want? All the glitter of the nice truck dissappears quickly.
People told me I should have switched Driver Managers, but why?
If the co. can not respect me to start, then they won't ever offer me the respect.

I drive for my old boss, making .32 cpm, I make the miles, and when I don't get the miles I get a flat daily rate that still affords me the better part of 500 to 600 *take-home pay a week - plus tips, free hotel rooms, and 95% of the time free meals.
There's no competition amongst drivers, since I'm 1 of 3, and the only Full Time driver.

By the way, something really ironic... my old boss, being in upstate SC - has a contract with Swift doing the detailing on Swift O/O trucks being traded in, as well as detailing some small fleet owners trucks leased to Swift. Ironic isn't it.

That's my 2 cents.
