Be sure to use OEM Mercedes parts when working with anything that is drive train. Some guy in the sprinter forums have used aftermarket serp belt tensioners and have had to fix again after 20k miles.

How many miles do you have on your MB4000 engine? I've heard good and bad things about that engine, heard they're quite and get decent fuel economy.

We have 937,000 miles. Owned it since it had 617,000. The motor has been good to us. We average 9-9.5 mpg without a generator. Plenty of power and not many problems. Hoping to go 1.3 million miles.

The local shop took it apart today. The thermostat came apart and fell into the water pump impeller. (The grinding we heard) There are also two bad tensioners. So I get new thermostats, tensioners, a water pump, new belts and they found a drive axle seal that had just begun to leak. According to the mechanic, he believes the water pump and tensioners are original. Not bad for 937,000 miles.
Haven't seen the bill yet.
