Teams

I'm wondering if a team must always be a team and a solo must always be a solo? Or is it possible for a solo to sometimes go out as a team? Or does it depend on the company?

As long as each driver is authorized by the carrier to which you are leased, you may operate as a team or a solo. This is often the case when one of the drivers must be off the truck fro personal reasons. You must always inform your carrier when you change team/solo status

Thanks for your quick reply!
One more quick question.. if a o/o goes with a carrier as a solo, and then later decides to become a team with his wife.. and the wife doesn't meet their requirement for minimum experience over the road, would the wife have to contract with another company to get the needed experience, or would most carriers allow the wife to gain her experience with them, in this case? Gotta start somewhere, right?
Thanks!

If you do not qualify for experience with Panther, that answer is NO! Experience requirements are usually an insurance issue.

I thought Panther didn't require experience with straight trucks.

We have found that when we need to be home at a certain time and find ourselves in the area of the house but say a week early we will go on a solo status. You have to inform your carrier and also let your carrier know who the driver will be. As for adding your wife later talk to the recruiters at the carrier's you are looking at and find out what their regulations are.

Would they expect the wife of the OO contracted with Panther, to go out and get a specified amount of experience as a company driver with a competitor, first, before she could team with her husband, then? Or would they perhaps subsitute the experience requirement for.. a course or something?

Panther doesn't require you to have any prior experience driving for straight trucks. My husband had his CDL A, but I had never driven before we got hired. You do have to have a permit to get set up in orientation I believe, or be getting it within 30 days. Keep in mind though, until your wife actually has her CDL B, she will not be allowed to drive the truck with their knowledge due to insurance reasons. We asked about why the ad says straight truck spouse training, and they said it was an old ad. One person told me you could train your spouse in an empty parking lot, and another said no, you can't even let them drive at all.

We ended up going home for a week so I could pay a little money to a company that let me practice in their truck with a trainer, and take the test in it. Hope this helps a little.

Sorry guys, I have tractors and strait trucks......strait trucks is no experiecne required so I took the questions as "when wife does not meet minimum experience" as a tractor question. Panther requires tractor experience to drive tractor.

As to the spousal training...yes the spouse is allowed to drive in lots on the licensed spouses time. We take spousal training teams in strait trucks all the time.
