Landstar has a safety message for all you road warriors.

FIDO = Forget it and drive on.

As ATeam said, if it's getting to you, it's time for a coffee .. get out and walk around a bit ....

My action of choice is to simply slow down, until they pass ... allow them distance me by 1/4 mile or so, then return to the speed I was driving.

Road bullies ya. Mean.lol

We are not out here to arm our vehicles, do combat or win. We are out here to pick up, transport and deliver freight safely and on time.

If you feel a negative emotion of any kind while you are behind the wheel, it is a sign that you are in danger of doing serious damage to your career if not your life and limb or those of others.

Driving a commercial vehicle is not about getting even. It's about keeping you and your fellow motorists safe, no matter how terrible they may be or how deserving of your wrath they are.

RIGHT ON, Phil! NO body in this world hates bad and dangerous drivers more than me, but people, you can't do it! You can't hurl anything out your window, becasue obviously the person is a bad/inexperinced driver and hurling something at them, especially ANYTHING that hits their windshield could and probably WILL cause them to panic and they could lose control and leave the road or worse swerve into someone else's lane. If they get killed...guess whose fault it is? You would have to live with that for the rest of your life. That's why people who hit their brakes when someone is right on their bumper is inviting a rear collision and YOUR gastank is the first thing they will hit! Then it is a case of being DEAD right! Its just NOT worth it. Even if you WIN it's not worth it. WE are professionals...let me say that again, PROFESSIONALS...as much as any Doctor, Brain Surgeon, Lawyer ever thought of being, so we ought to know better! PLEASE, PLEASE try to have patience and say something like, "GOD forgive them 'cause they know NOT what they do!" Just my opinion.

I really hate to say this because I dont want to give you any ideas but..
A few well hidden marbles in your truck will insure she doesnt drive Daddies car again..

But really dont do that..Im serious..Not a good idea.
You BET it's not a good idea! Ya think the car behind you is the ONLY vehicle that will get hit with those marbles?

Wow. Blinding drivers with bright lights, throwing hard spherical objects, bubble gum, washer fluid, even vegetables. I'm impressed at the wide variety of ways people can implement the "Two Wrongs Make a Right" theory of Professional Drivers Driving Professionally.

Personally, I prefer the "Golden Rule" school of thought, which seems to work in all situations and conditions.

Tailgaters, by definition, already tend to exercise poor judgment. Why give them additional opportunities to show just how bad their judgment can be?

Then there's the common sense approach considering the ubiquitous traffic cameras and the dash-cam popularity, where all you need to do is ask yourself the question, "Do I want my flying vegetables flying out the window to be caught flying, and then splatting, on video?"

I deal with them the same way I deal with other miserable people in life (mainly border agents). Let em do their thing and karma will catch up to them. Or won't. Don't matter, I've got coffee to drink.

... WE are professionals...let me say that again, PROFESSIONALS...as much as any Doctor, Brain Surgeon, Lawyer ever thought of being, so we ought to know better! ...

That's just it. Every so often, someone starts a thread here in the Open Forum about professionalism. Members quickly jump in to talk about how professional they are and what it means to be a professional. Yet some of those same people talk in this thread about getting even. That is not professional. No one who intentionally commits an unsafe act on the road can rightfully claim to be a professional driver.

Professional drivers maintain a safety mindset at all times. They think ahead not about ways to get even or do combat with other vehicles, about about ways to stay safe when other drivers are not driving safe around them. When a negative event develops, they react in accordance with their rehearsed thoughts and mindset ... slow down, changes lanes, forget it and drive on (FIDO), etc.

If you are running get-even thoughts or memories through your mind now, you are increasing the likelihood that you will react poorly when the next negative event develops.

Think about what you are thinking about, and then think about things that will keep you and others safe on the road.

This is something anyone can do. For example, if you typically react with anger when someone cuts you off, think ahead of time about reacting in a different way. Think now about how you will react the next time. Then when it happens, try to react without anger and with safety foremost on your mind. Rehearse the event in your mind now. Imagine now how it will look and feel when you forget it and drive on when you are next cut off.

Instead of cussing about that no-good so-and-so and letting your blood boil, think FIDO and take satisfaction in the fact that you were the professional who saved that driver's life today.

To change your behavior tomorrow and become a professional in every sense of the word, change your mind today.

:)HEALTH A
LERT:)

Its Called the Extensor Digitorum Brevis Muscle.
This is the muscle that travels from your ankle to your toes and allows you to lift your toes and foot onto your heel. I noticed that I as well as other drivers often experiance a spasm of this muscle. It is often borought on by four wheelers taigating and persists until a driver can find them thier mirrors or the tailgater eventualy pasess reliving this condition. Unfortunately it is chronic and there is no known cure but can be controlled by avoiding four wheelers who like to to measure the tread depth, or clean the mud flaps while you are driving.
Just Remember Be profesional and do not return the tailgating Show that you are a profesional and dont blind or throw anything at tailgaters as this is illeagal, unsafe, and un profesional if it resulst in a wreck you will be nailed to the wall.

B.T.W. This is posted in humor.

Just Slow Down and they will pass.

We all know slowing down is still a better bet so we can avoid that deer, car or kid that comes out of nowhere. I dont have to change my weight class having my truck weigh an extra 3,000 to 5000 lbs I want to carry 10,000 lbs of freight not 5000 lbs Also if you opperate under your own authority its good practice.

Zane, I'm not sure that anyone expected you to know these things. It is up to you to learn from these threads and learn the responsibility that comes with being a professional driver. Those who have never taken a CDL training class may not have been taught how they, as professional drivers, should react in different situations. Some companies have extensive orientations where these things will be covered, others don't.

This has actually been a good thread. It is always good to have a reminder that safety has to be first and foremost in our minds as professional drivers. Some of the drivers around us, even professionals, will tempt us to make unprofessional decisions. That does not make it the right decision.

Ateam, NotaNewbie and others have expressed it better than I can. Read those posts and live by them. They are the correct way to handle the tailgater situation. Learning to handle other negative events as a responsible and professional driver help to reduce stress levels and might help you to avoid a ticket...or worse.

East and West are quite close, as they are merely directions on a globe, and are forever conjoined at the longitudinal position of the observer. Stand there facing North. East is immediately to your right, West is immediately to your left, with East and West not even being as far apart as your feet. Yet East and West are infinitely apart and the twain shall never meet. Go West young man and throw your uneaten produce to the East, I say!

Tomatoes to the East of them!
Cumquats to the West of them.
Bananas to the front of them!
Volleyed & thundered;
Stormed at with seed and peel,
Boldly they drove and well,
Into the jaws of Bidding
Into the mouth of Dwell Hell
Rode the blundered six hundred.

Forward the lightweight brigade!
Onward, pickled cucumbers, on!
