I'd give KVH TracVision A5 a good look. Had mine for a year and very pleased.

Prices are down $250 from when we purchased ours. Plus,a very simple installation it would be, in a van.

If you've got DIRECTV at home , the charge is only $4.99 per month.

When I was out on the road. I had a direct tv unit. Regular dish I used. Had a pole welded to a peice of 2" sq tubing.Slid it into my towing receiver, adjusted the dish and wamo had good reception all the time I set idle. If you have Direct Tv at home, you can add a additional receiver to your home for 4.99 monthly. But you can't rent movies on PPV channels.Have to be hooked up to a phone line to rent movies. What I did was when I was home I would take the receiver out of my van hook it up in the house, hook up the phone line,so their computer could do its thing. Then when I went back out I could rent movies on PPV channels until their computer realized that I wasn't hooked up to a phone line.Got a few free movies.

Another option to look at is the Slingbox. This is good if you have cable or satellite at home, and have internet at home and in your vehicle. No monthly charges. No dish to put up and take down Plus you can watch your local channels and all of your cable/ satellite channels. Cost 250 in stores like Best Buy. Ebay for around$175. Just another thought, works well for me. ;) :D

Camping World stores sell all that stuff, from $50 to $2,300. They can install a dish on top of your van so you don't have to hang it out of your window every time you park. Some of the dishes automatically align themselves with the satellite so all you have to do is push a button, and you don't have to enter a zip code or anything like that. Some even stay locked on the satellite as you drive so a passenger can watch TV while you're moving. We had a in motion Winegard that we replaced twice. Motors kept going out. Went to the fold down and no problems after that. They have a slim line now but have no experience with that unit.

If it's like Dish network it stores the charges . Wouldn't it charge you when you hooked up to the phone at home again ? Some RV catalogs have signal seeking antennas that will stay hooked to the satellite while running down the road . Pricey , but nice .

You wanna play , you gtta pay . You need the receiver to get a satellite signal and in most cases the provider owns the equipment and it's supposed to be returned if you drop the service .

I may be misunderstanding but I'm hearing you ask if you could use the dish antenna to pull in regular tv stations thinking of the dish as maybe a better antenna. If you just want good regular tv you can (at least you could many years ago) get an antenna like at most homes except the arms all fold up against the center beam. We had a motorhome in the late 70's early 80's and had one. It worked pretty well. You just had to turn it to get good reception sometimes. If I misunderstood then forget all that.
