During My 28 Years on the Dept. We have Had Dodge which was Ok to Drive But Rode Rough And was Dependable, Chevrolet Impala's Which were comfortable to Drive, But the Suspension was Crap when in a High Speed Pursuit Even with the Built up Suspensions if you had to Cross Railroad Tracks in a Pursuit when you Came down it would be all over the Road, And Ford Crown Victorias which were Very Comfortable to Drive, And Had the Speed when You Needed it! I Can't Imagine what a Taurus would be like as a Police Car as it sits too low to the Ground And is Smaller than the Crown Vic, And I'm Thinkin that with that, It would be rough to get comfortable In as well as Putting some Dirtbag in the Back Seat to take him to the Cross Bar Motel..However, I Have Never Driven a Taurus so I Can't say for sure!! :D

The new Taurus is the Ford Five Hundred rebadged so should make a nice driving buggy. Btw OVM Italy has had high speed pursuit vehicles like that for years to catch the guys on the highway system. There's no speed limits between cities there (or there used not to be) so the Germans and French and others drive at insane speeds. Lots of fun actually. I enjoyed the cruises on the autobahn and other highways with open limits. The Georgia Highway patrol years ago used have Javelins in AMX trim. The OPP btw as had a similar vehicle in the DeTomaso Pantera parked at the old Keele -401 station. Don't know if you remember the large garage next to the building near the old MTO buildings. They also had a Datsun 260z (I think that particular model) with radar front and rear.

GA used to have some V8 Mustangs that they ran on the interstates. They now have some Dodge Chargers. Then, completely off topic, There are the pickup trucks trhat the AZ highway patrol has. Jerry Lee

"... Taurus can't offer a V8 ..."

That's funny, I drove one with a 4.4 lt v8 in it.

Even though it is basically a Volvo platform with Ford skin on it, it is an interesting car and shows that Ford may have another good car on their hands to sell. I think the v8 was an overkill, but it was a test vehicle ... sort of and it is hoped that the option comes available for this market.

Between the 500 and the Taurus, there are 500 changes made to the skin and interior of the car, amazing that "500" pops up a lot.If you want a better car, get a Volvo by the way but if you want a Ford, get a Ford.

The re-badging was due to a market study that Ford did in 2006/7, they found the slumping sales of the 500 was due to the lack of name recognition, where the Taurus had all the hype when it came out in the 80's and it was embedded in the minds of many of the present buyers.

It is a lot like the reasoning behind MKX opposed to the Mark X (ten), they did a study a while back that showed that the average Lincoln buyer didn't know much about the history of the Mark series and couldn't understand roman numerals - I'm not kidding.

by the way, somewhere in Germany there is a McClaren Mercedes used as a high speed pursuit car. Nothing like a $500,000 car as a police car.

Every cop I've talked to prefers the Crown Vic over the Impala and the Charger. The Impala is gutless and the Chargers roof is a killer for tall officers.
