Surcharge for Union Shops?

You mean detention/wait time?
Remember DX pays TOTAL wait time on the load...that is if you wait 3/4 hour to load and 3/4 to unload..you will get paid 1/2 hr. D time/wait time.

We don't usually know where we're picking up or dropping, until we've accepted the load. The only info given are cities. But usually, you can guess the company by their city.
Griffin, GA = CAT
Sharonville, OH = Ford
Georgetown, KY = Toyota
If you wanted to add a little to your rate for going to where you expect a union shop, nothing stopping you. But once you put in your bid, you can't just alter it without a good reason. And "It's a union shop" ain't one of them.

When you're an independent.. and you're bidding on a load.. and your bid is accepted.. is there wording in your contract to allow for any weird stuff that happens.. ?? Like, anything that might happen.. such as the above.. or say the paperwork at the border wasn't done properly and there was a massive wait.. or any million other things.. or.. is your bid just your price, no matter WHAT happens?

That would usually come down to detention pay. You set up an amount (or they have a pre-determined rate) when you sign the initial contract with the carrier.
Hey pj, there is that employee attitude rearing it's head again. Waiting for someone to tell you what to do. In the example you gave, being THE Carrier, YOU write the contract. YOU don't allow yourself to be spoon fed. YOU cover your bases. YOU!!!!

Boy this is a touchy subject for me. I (was) a third generation UAW worker. When I started in expedite I was laid off from a UAW plant.
I have to agree, a union plant is the WORST place to take freight into.
Since union jobs are "bid" by seniority, it seems the ones that don't want to work to begin with bid on the dock jobs :-( Most of the guys I worked with were not like that!!
