Students disciplined for self defense

They told me in grade school that darn permanent record would follow me all my life.

If I was those guys, the guns would be well concealed in the apt.

I'd rather risk school probation over the risk of being unarmed at home.

My Right to bear arms, trumps their stupid policy.......

having a firearm on university-owned property, is a violation of Gonzaga policy, whether or not that property is located on campus.

Whether the rule is right or wrong, the students were disciplined for breaking the rule, not for self defense. If they couldn't live with the rule [as many of us could not], they should have lived in a place not owned by the university, and therefore, not subject to the university rule about weapons in their home.
Only they didn't know the rule - is that an excuse, now?

I think not knowing the rule in this case is a legitimate excuse, since the residence isn't actually owned by the university, but rather is off-campus housing leased by the university for the students.

you are splitting hairs....owned or rented by......the students are sub renters governed by the University rules....

US government doesn't own most buildings but you can't take a weapon into it....??

I'm not splitting anything. I simply said it was understandable that they didn't know the rule, since it was off-campus housing. That doesn't mean they shouldn't have known the rule. "No guns on campus" is a well known rule, known even to those two guys, as they have stated, but they didn't equate off-campus housing to the same rule. Understandable. And as an excuse, it was one that was good enough to keep them from being expelled, so the university agrees with my assessment, as well.

Nothing like congratulating students for being ignorant of the rules, and for breaking them. What a great addition that makes to their 'education'. :(

I'd congratulate them for knowingly breaking it. That would mean they are surpassing their education.

Certainly the more appropriate point of view. If nothing had happened they might have gone 4 years, or however long it took to graduate, with nobody knowing of the presence of their protection. Sort of like a case I know of of a parent being armed on the daughter's intermediate and high school campuses for 6 years and the same for the second daughter for 10 years total of elementary, intermediate and high school campuses. Nothing ever happened so nobody ever knew of the scores of times someone was capable and willing to protect any of the students, teachers and/or visitors to the campus.

What I like best about this story is that it tells every would-be burglar and criminal that every apartment in that complex is unarmed. <snort>
