staying out longer

Each unit will handle staying out differently. Running as a single from mid-michigan means I am rarely more than 5-6 hundred miles from home. I can still get home for 100-125 dollars. Sleeping in my own bed, with my beautiful wife, and spending time with my children and grandchildren is priceless. I know it is not for everyone, and many simply cannot pull it off. I may have stayed out a total of 4 weekends in 22 years of expediting. I credit that with keeping me in the game this many years. I helps to have a pension also. As others have said, there can be an expense in staying out. I have seen some of my fellow drivers pounding money into the video games like there was no tomorrow. I also see a fair number of expeditors parked in the casino parking lots. No one way is the right way, each driver/team has to figure out what works best for their situation.

Yeah, but video games and casinos are not valid business expenses connected with staying out. They likely spend equal money at home for entertainment. I don't do video games OR gamble but spend a good bit on hunting and fishing, more so when home.

....there are those out there that might say well i dont think i spend a $100 over the weekend, i bet your not to far off try it add up what you spend on the next 2 or 3 weekends and see what you spend im curious to know....

Diane and I keep track of every penny we make and spend and know from our spreadsheet that when we are home, we spend more on food than when we are out on the road. There are several reasons for that.

We eat out at nice restaurants with friends and relatives when we are home. Diane likes to cook so when a full kitchen is available, more money is spent on cooking that is more involved than what is generally done in the truck. We eat more often at home, falling back into that old three meals a day habit when we are there. On the road, we only eat when we are hungry and then it is often a snack instead of a full meal. On the road, we eat in the truck most of the time, not in restaurants.

In the month of March, to feed the two of us, we spent a total of $136.74 on food not purchased in grocery stores (fast food, dine in, take-out, DQ, movie theater popcorn, etc.). That number includes a meal at a restaurant where I picked up the tab for myself and two lunch guests.

Everyone is different Phil. We spend FAR more on the road than at home. We seldom eat at restaurants at home, they are a punishment. We prefer home cooked, more so with relatives. We also have an ample supply of venison, duck and fish in the freezer so I spend less.

The difference may be the full kitchen, large refrigerator, counter space and dining table we have in our big sleeper. It makes it easy to cook and eat "at home."

P.S. I am take your choice, thrifty, frugal, or cheap! I spend ten bucks a day or less not counting showers.

It is my boyfriend's call on whether we stay or go, so many variables such as distance from home, weather, how long we have been out....not going to drive home empty from Laredo in December, for example. Something comes along. We like to walk and take in the local scenery, so we find a lot of free things to do. Lately we were in Minneapolis/St. Paul and spent time on the Mississippi River Walk.
Parks, museums, state capitols: alot to do for free in any given area. Plenty of books and Droid video games for bad weather days.

Just in food, we spend about $6 a day. We don't do the restaurant thing, we get our sandwich fixings and fresh fruit about every 3 days at Wally's and other snacks at the
$ Tree about once a week. We bring non-perishables with us when we can.

There is no standard answer for how far he will drive home empty; every run has its own unique set of circumstances that he has to assess each day he's out.

Wish I had clearcut way of determination...in this life, there's not.

movie theater popcorn,

I still have myself convinced that someday the taste of that stuff will justify the price.

I stay out 2-3 months. I was last home Superbowl weekend. I'll be going home the 2nd week in May to see my sons bad compete in the finals of "Band Wars".
