Starting Out

I am interested in getting into expediting. I have been in courier industry here in Portland, OR for 10 years and want a change. I don't have a truck but am single and willing to be out 4-6 weeks or more if necessary. I am looking to drive someone's 'B' unit(solo). Anybody have any info as to where I should look for that sort of thing?

Hi Newthead,

Looking for information on expediting? I think you've come to the right place...;-)

Are you prepared to run S. California and the standard Expedited Freight Lanes here in the Midwest? There is a 99.999% chance that you will spend most of your time in the Midwest, something to consider since you live in OR.

I am COMPLETELY ready to run in the Midwest! I am anxious to see other parts of the country.I have NO problems with being away from the NW for extended periods of time. I love to drive.

Newthead: interested in how you did in the courier business. May try it later this year with a 3/4 or 1 ton van. Would appreciate hearing from you.

Hi DooWop.
I operate right now as an independent contractor for a courier company. I have my own DBA and operated as a sole proprietorship for 1.5 years. I was also company driver for 6 years prior to that.
I have used a mini van and a truck w/canopy. A full size van is good but not all that necessary for courier work(unless you know your potential customers will have bigger, heavier items) I have needed use of a full size van only twice as a business owner.
A mini van would be great.
At the height of running my own business, I was making $40,000.00+
per year. That was with only 2 accounts! It was nice, I wrote the VAST majority of my taxes off due to mileage. I was fortunate in that regard but I lost both accounts within 3 months of each other.:-( Neither was because of anything I did or didn't do.
I like what I do now, the $ isn't as good but I have all weekends and most holidays free. I do want to move on though.....expediting but more likely trucking for a few years. Hope this helps.

Take care,
Newthead
