I work on the river as a pilot and am saving up to buy a truck and trailer out right. What are the best pay splits to find and keep a good driver. I will continue to work on the river and live off my boat wage while using the profit from the truck to grow and get more trucks. But want a good pay system for the people that help me get my biusness off the ground. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You're missing my point.
You're starting a fleet in this business without even knowing anything about it. If you did, you would know how much to pay.
My advice, get into a truck, learn the business first, then build your fleet.
That's what I'm trying to do. I will get a truck and trailer. Get my own authority. Drive while I'm home off the boat. Probably 35% of the load to the driver. I will look into brokers with the fast pay for starting out and handle some of my own loads with a few of the shippers that I'm in touch with around where I live.

First the $ 150,000 figure means nothing to most us here .... Not Impressed at all ... if you LOSE $250,000 a year jumping in without any knowledge ...

I plan on taking it nice and slow. Just trying to start a discussion on here to get some tips and experiences from others. My cousin is OO but his wife blowed his money as he makes it and stays behind. My dad said he would drive local areas. But not a good way to get something started there. He's with usher now hailing tankers. I would stick with what I know with getting a boat but I don't want to go in debt starting a company. Cost over a mil to 2 mil to get a boat company started.

I have over 20 years doing tractor trailer etc everything but Tanker or Doubles...and the rest of these guys have as much or more experience. Don't listen to us...or better, become a nuclear power plant engineer....and start a business running them, oh and then try to figure out how to do it without any experience or knowledge. Don't learn from anyone as an employee either...makes as much sense.

I'm simply asking questions. And more people are more about acting high and mighty about the industry. Towboats and trucks do the same thing. We deliver product from shipper to receiver. Go thru the same paperwork or even more. No I do not think I can just do this on a whim. It will take dedication. But I'm willing to learn and do it. Everyone starts somewhere.

Why don't you tell me. What would it take for you to risk it with someone whose willing to fund his own business start up. Not that I'm asking you to but I want to know. 35% of the load and flexible home time. Not going to be living off the truck profits. So I can save up faster and won't be pressed for trying to run a driver to death to make payments. Least enough to make decent profit after insurance, tags, and taxes.
