2003 international , caterpillar engine,,,,needs starter,,,,,my son want to replace it himself, but never has done this. Is this something we should leave to the truckstop mechanics or is this something that can be done in the yard at home? What kind of tools are need, as air tools etc.

Not hard at all. Most can be done with basically tools although as I get older, a air ratchet is my best friend. If he is a novice, when dropping the starter, tape the wires and mark in case he forgets how it is wired. Or....take a picture with a phone so it can be referenced when installing the new one.
It is amazing how those wires can look different after having a few beers during the repair. :D

9 years old. Could be quite a knuckle buster. Even if he uses hand tools I'd recommend using an impact socket.

disconnect the batteries or tape the ends and be very careful. tape and untape one at a time as you disconnect and reinstall the wires.

As stated already the batteries must be disconnected first, it is very important. Get a few pictures of how the wires are positioned, in this case a picture will prevent a 1000 words. :D It is usually easier to tie the starter in position with a piece of rope so you can drop it slowly. This gives him the ability to make sure all the wires are indeed off and to make sure the core isn't damaged so he can return it and get his money back. Typically once the wires are disconnected he will have 3 nuts to remove, one is usually hidden. After he removes the 3 nuts he removes the old starter and carefully puts in the new one to make sure he doesn't damage any teeth on the flywheel or new starter. Then he just tightens up the nuts and wires on the starter and batteries.

Starter replacement, straight forward enough, but, you want to Be sure and pay close attention to wire routing so as not to be rubbing against anything when done, as well as leads tight and corrosion free. Too many stories of fires after starter installs on big trucks. The main lead wire is a direct connection to the mega amps provided by the bank of batteries hot side and will ignite wire insulation in a hurry if grounded out. Good Luck
