What year did Sprinters switch to using Def & if you had a choice would you buy a fairly new Sprinter with Def or a reliable older Sprinter without?

Thanx

2007 they added a dpf (diesel particulate filter) and in 2010 they started using def (diesel exhaust fluid).

That's what makes me nervous about getting one. Others have the same love/hate relationship with them. Thanx Hobo.

Im going to throw my 2 cents in here, I have seen people with DPF issues and always took their Sprinter to a dealer for the oil changes. I have to wonder if they are not putting the correct oil in, for a DPF, using the wrong oil is very very bad.

Dealerships will always use the cheapest oil they can find, my suggestion is that if you dont want to change the oil yourself, purchase the oil and take it to them and insist that they use it.

Anyone else have a thought about that?

I have a 2008 sprinter I have used the mobil 1 esp oil from the dealer and found it was garbage before 10,000 mi I had to dump a quart in . I made the switch to amsoil now I run 30,000 mi on an oil change and I never do a top up plus I change the the oil filter every 10,000 mi I have sent the oil in for testing and it was still good at 30,000 mi . I also use there diesel fuel lube and anti gel and havn't had any problems with the pdf filter yet I hope this helps some people out thanks DST001

Anything is possible, I guess. The oil would have to be getting to the exhaust system somehow though.

I think the dpf problem is in the fact that the sprinter dpf does not regen itself like the big truck dpf's do. Somebody mentioned a manual regen once. If that is something that can be done, I think I would have it done once or twice a year. The thing might work fine if you could keep it from clogging?

It does all come down to clogging. That's why ideling is so bad the system does not run at a high enough temp level to burn soot.

Never had a problem with dealers and the correct oil always see them using qaurt containers of the correct oil.

Mobil 1 does seem to break down towards the end of a cycle always see a jump in mileage after a change. I have not experienced any loss of oil though.

This is why I like this forum. It may not be what I want to hear but at least get some honest answers. What would one say about taking a 2006 Sprinter with high miles and dropping in a new motor & transmission? or just say the hell with a Sprinter and go the direction of an ugly Nissan NV high top or maybe another direction? Just some things I'm wondering about.

Excellent! You are open minded enough to understand that what you read here, for the most part, may not be what you wanted to hear, but after discarding the chaff, what remains is pretty close to the truth.

What would one say about taking a 2006 Sprinter with high miles and dropping in a new motor & transmission?
I'm sure OntarioVanMan will weigh in on this. He dropped a new motor in his 700,000 mile Sprinter, but he was the original owner, so he knew this van.

Currently the NV is a two pallet no room for a bed when loaded cargo van. Keep researching, asking questions and making contributions to E.O. We all learn.

as far as the 06 sprinter..I took everything out motor wise in front of the firewall....everything replaced with OEM parts and a FULL Factory rebuild engine....now if you couple that with a new tranny....you'd pretty much have a new van...power train wise...budget 20K... add on what you paid for the used 06 and away ya go.....PROBLEM.....some carriers don't want that age of van....make sure you can put it on where your planning to first. Considering the abundance of replacement parts and people that can work on them...it is not a bad deal....your 23-25 mpg will help offset some of the expenses....

My 2006 has 450,000 miles but I have not had to replace any major part yet, although the accessories are starting to need replacing. I am going to sell her in a few months but I wouldn't go replacing the engine & transmission until there is trouble. I think its all about learning the Sprinter as much as you can in order to preserve it. Then again, I've owned it from day one, so I know what I have.

I'll take comfort, fuel economy, and load capacity over looks any day. Since when did any van look good? lol

While the new Dodge van has a face only a mother could love, do keep in mind that it's from a company who's best selling pickup truck is an oxymoron.

Many thought the Ram pickup to be ugly when it debuted, because it was so different. Same with the KW 600, earning it the nickname "Anteater". Try to imagine the reaction to the looks of this new Dodge van had it preceded the Sprinter's introduction to this country.
