Sprinter Wikipedia Entry

While doing a bit of Sprinter research on Wikipedia I came across this little nugget of information near the bottom of the Sprinter entry under the heading, "Uses":

In North America, most Sprinters are sold as cargo vans to expediters in the United States. Such expediters are similar to truck drivers, except they take smaller loads and will wait after unloading until dispatchers find another customer nearby to transport goods. The advent of the Sprinter van with its cargo space of 13-1/2 feet (4.1 m) has allowed van expediters to take three 48 x 48 in (1.22 x 1.22 m) skids or pallets, where previously they were limited to a capacity of two pallets A Sprinter is capable of hauling approximately 3000lb (1360kg) of cargo.

Moot,

That information is from Mercedes-Benz. A Sprinter sales person will learn during their OEM training that Expediter's are the 2nd largest buyers of their vans in North America. I recall that utilities/occupational are #1.

Where do they get that 3000 lb garbage? A 2500 has the same GVW as a 3/4 cargo van, so it has the same payload, which the last time I checked is not 3000 lbs.

I wouldn't call it garbage. Most of them don't have 3000 lbs payload, but some do. Mine has 3250 lbs payload.

Not me. I ran across that entry a few years ago and found it amusing. That section has been edited for clarity and errors a few times by <YurikBot>, <Hkeaton>, and a few others from the <talk> discussions, but I have a feeling that the original entry was made by someone new to expediting who had recently bought a Sprinter and wanted to give his new occupation some props. :D

A MY2005 high roof 158" wheel base Sprinter 2500 has a GVRW of 8550, a Curb Weight of 5076, and a Cargo Capacity of 3474. Shorter wheel base and low roof Sprinters have considerably more Cargo Capacity. The low roof 118 WB has a Capacity of 4142, for example.

Of course, the capacity gets reduced by whatever you put in there to outfit it, like insulation, bunk, batteries, tie-down straps, personal items, etc.

I had a 2007 long and tall, not a lot of added weight, and the payload was only around 2600 with the fuel full. Was the empty weight much lower on the older ones?

Mine had the same sticker. That's a bit less than 3000, especially when you consider the weight of the driver and whatever else is in there.

even at a mere 200 for "stuff" another 200 for driver....2400 payload...

and man at 47Lbs front pressure my MPG would be a lot lower....

scaled at a pickup last month....5980 me in it..... 3/4 tank of fuel....

Well, the new engines are heavier, and so is the engine mount frame, but the long, tall 07 has a GVRW of 8550 and a Curb Weight of 5271, with a max Payload of 3597. Options, accessories and other assorted accouterments will affect the actual load capacity, of course.

I bought Michelin tires ms2 and put nitrogen in them. I run 50psi in the front and 70psi in the rear. They got 15k on them and just rotated them and no wear on the sides at all. The tire shop couldnt believe it.

Thanks for the info Lawrence. I started this thread because I was surprised to see a reference to expediting. I was even more surprised that it went on to give a brief description of what we do. I had no intention of getting the Sprinter fan club all stirred up.

By the way, I believe Shane runs 70 psi all around. Check with Scott. He knows for sure.

FWIW, back in the days when I had a Sprinter-- a 2005 long and tall-- I went to the trouble of putting it on the scale. Full tank of fuel and me and my stuff-- I was not carrying cargo, so--"empty"-- I still could have managed 2850 or thereabouts, most of it either directly over or just forward of the rear axle. Gotta give the old red beast credit, it could haul heavy when it needed to without straining too bad. OK, maybe it's not a true 3K load limit, but-- you're gonna cry over 150 lbs?

My present ride, a Chevy 2500 heavy (8600 GVWR) can manage about 2900 lbs of paying freight. More or less. Problem: The volume the Chevy can handle is considerably less than the Sprinter could have done. Sometimes, I do miss the room back there.

they whine and cry over 100 Lbs....funny thing is....since CV's are not regulated....no such thing as "illegal" really ...more like "liable" comes to mind....
