Sprinter service

I am in Charlotte, NC getting my first service done at Metrolina Dodge.

The price for the service is 500 dollars. Other dealers have quoted me a price of around 150. When I brought this up, I was told that is just for oil and filter.

Ok, this is my first service, and is at ten thousand miles. My question is this....

Am I looking forward to 500 bucks a month for service on this vehicle, or is Metrolina robbing me?

If it costs this much to service this vehicle then I guess I better make a lot more money than I had planned on.

That seems very expensive. I'd ask for an itemized list of included services and costs.

WOW!
outside of the tire rotation, it is cheaper for me to get an oil change and I use 6 gallons of Mobile one with three filters and I would have money left over for a new air filter and a coolant recharge.

OVM/Turtle, does this seem high?

I believe Discount Tires will rotate your tires for free. I don't recall prices but I've heard filters can be obtained much cheaper sometimes. Is the air filter called for replacement every 10k miles? I'd think it could be user replaced and save the $24 labor. I don't know about the fuel filter but it might be user changeable too and again, is it called for every 10k miles? Hopefully Turtle and OVM will weigh in as they have a lot of Sprinter experience and knowledge.

Thanks for the input. I guess I will chalk this up to part of the tuition for attending Expedite University. ;)

This an 07 or 08? 6 cyl. diesel?

Unfortunately if your not handy this will be about right...I do my own oil changes and oils about 6.00-6.50 a quart and the filter is 12.00....but I am an 05
Also the 07 aftermarket folters prolly aren't out yet....Autozone usually has them pretty quick

They charged you 24 bucks to change an air filter? You'd better be learning to do the small things...it's so easy a caveman could do it!!

BTW the fuel filter....I think turtle and I do it about every 50-60,000...forget the book and don't waste your money.

It is an 08 Sprinter. I did not add that because it is in my signature. 3.0 diesel

I thought it was kind of weird to change the fuel filter so soon. My oil costs 10 to 12 bucks a quart depending on which dealer I talk to.

It is the oil Mercedes and Turtle recommend. I don't even know where the air filter is. I am not retarded, just not born knowing that.

I need to hook up with someone who can show me where it is. I have done things a lot more complicated than changing an air filter, so I am sure I can learn.

p.s. Emotions don't show through in my typing, so I am not really upset. I am just trying to learn how to make this business work.

Whatcha gotta find is a user friendly technician...yes there are some and have him walk you thru the van....Mine did in SD...showed me all the fun stuff...the oil is available at AutoZone. every 5- $20 purchases you get a $20 gift card!! so ya spend a hundred and get 20 back! Not a bad deal....The BOOK says fuel filter every 10,000 miles but that garbage ...we do about 50,000 and it's still in good shape....the BOOK will put you in the poor house.

If you have a decent tech near home you might ask if you could take him to lunch one day in exchange for walking you through things like air/fuel filter changes etc. that you could do on your own.

Ditto what OVM says on the fuel filter - and buying oil at Autozone.

I think I have changed my fuel filter twice - at around 35K and 74K miles .... probably could have gone longer but didn't want to chance having it ended up restricted while I was on a load - particularly during the winter when the prospect of changing it on the roadside seemed less appealing. I do carry a spare in the van and I'll probably experiment to see how long I can stretch it (50K sounds good)

My '06 has the ASSYST maintenance computer that monitors oil quality - I generally average 13K to 15K miles between oil/filter changes - and additionally I change the oil filter only again at the halfway mark - around 7K into the oil change.

I just changed my oil day before yesterday - in the parking lot of the Husky truckstop in Mississauga, ON - at 13638 miles since the previous change.

I have a Fumoto drain valve (Thanks Turtle !) installed in place of the drainplug in the oil pan and I carry an empty 2 1/2 gallon jug that "TidyCat" cat litter came in. The Fumoto drain valve has a nipple on it that I attach a short section of clear hose (included with the drain valve) to and run into the jug. Pull up the lever on the Fumoto and turn it a 1/4 turn and the oil drains out. Unscrew the oil filter cap (3/8" ratchet, extension, and filter wrench) and pull the old oil filter cartridge and change it out.

Turn the lever on the Fumoto another 1/4 turn to close it back up and reinstall the spring hose clamp (to ensure the lever isn't ever accidently opened from being hit from some road debris) Add new oil. Elapsed time: maybe 30 or so minutes. Net cost: $53.66 plus tax (for 9 1/2 qts of Mobil 1 0W-40 and filter, including the $20 credit from Autozone)

The ASSYST system includes an air filter restriction indicator on the air filter housing - and according to the instructions in the manual "If the red field reaches the 100% range the air filter element should be replaced as soon as possible."

Additionally the instructions in the maintenance portion of the manual, under "Scope of Work for Maintenance Service" are as follows:

"Check degree of contamination. Air cleaner filter element renewed as necessary"

Additionally, under "Additional Maintenance Work After .... Years"

"Every 3 Years: Air Cleaner Filter Element Renewal"

I'm at 90600 or so miles .... and the original air filter - it has never showed any restriction on the gauge (which I check regularly) and I have checked/inspected the filter itself several times - no sign of collapsing (which would indicate restriction) and not terribly dirty. (I'll probably go ahead and change it out at around 100K.)

Here's some data on why you don't necessarily need to change an air filter every 10,000, 25,000, or even 50,000 miles:

Rlent,
I am wondering if a bypass filter will extend that oil change or it is a waste of money on the sprinter version of the engine?

RLENT

Greg,

I dunno of any reason why a bypass system couldn't extend the change interval - other than the fact that there is apparently no plugged port or other place to tap into .... at least that's what I have heard ..... haven't personally inspected it all over myself.

(The actual housing for the filter is down in the block itself, with a just a plastic or phenolic cap that filter slides onto and which then screws into the block.)

It would be interesting to see what effect a bypass system would have on the oil sensor in the maintenance system - and how the reduction of dirt and soot would play out vs. breakdown of the additives in the oil.

Rlent,
If I remember right, but may have this confused with another vehicle, the OA sensor really is not a sensor at all but an algorithm used to determine the life of the oil form many factors when the van is driven.

I know that Bosch and Delphi have an OA self contained sensor and now based on that technology there is a product out there that is a dipstick replacement with bluetooth technology - Intellestick.

Well anywho Daimler (the company that was once know as Daimler-Benz then Daimler-Chrysler) may have started using the actual sensor in the engine. Don't have any manuals newer than 2005 and I can't find that one right now.

Greg,

From what I read (and I don't recall exactly where offhand) the system uses a dielectric sensor to measure electrical capacitance or conductivity. As the vehicle is run the oil becomes dirty and contaminated and the oil's electrical conductivity increases. I believe that other data (such as running/idle time, type of driving, etc.) is also factored into the equation by the computer to progressively derate the remaining oil life.

I don't have the CD-ROM repair manual for my 2006 yet but I did read one for a earlier year Sprinter - that may be where I got the info and description of how it operates .... or not. :D

BTW, I have actually seen the "miles remaining" increase by several hundred miles (it goes in 100 mile increments) - after adding oil (I was 3/4 of quart low) - so I gotta think it's actually measuring something.

Yep your right, I could not remember and I finally found my 2005 sprinter manual. I also found the Bosch cut sheet for the OA sensor, pretty much like the Delphi one. If I am home during the SAE conference, I will go down there and talk to Bosch to get more info. Delphi has a manual floating around that tells all about the sensor and how it works, I been trying to get my hands on it but haven't really tried hard enough.

Intellestick. An intelligent dipstick? I guess I inadvertently complimented the driver I picked up freight from last week. Oh well!
