Sprinter Service

I was about to get my Sprinter serviced (very close on my interval) when I was offered a load to Laredo. I took it. Problem is, when I got down there I found out the local dealer did'nt do Sprinters. I called Dodge to get the location of the closest dealer and was told the computers were down. Doesn't anyone use directories any more? Then I called my dealer who told me the dealer in Corpus Christie could do it. I called them and they said come on over and they would get me right in. I got there and then found out that they were out of fuel filters and the special Mobile-1 oil they use. It took them 2 hours to find a source on the oil and do the job. By the time I got done it had cost me a day and about $40 more than at my local dealer and I still didn't get the fuel filter changed. I guess the moral of the story is.... stick to the dealers you know or do it yourself. Lesson learned.
QUESTION: Is everyone else using that Modile-1 euro blend 0w40 they recommend or something else? I wanted to use Rotella but the tech wouldn't put it in.

Special Mobile-1 euro blend?

I think that Mobile-1 is just Mobile-1 and they are full of it (person opinion due to Dodge dealer’s lies).

Plain old Mobile-1 is listed as accepted and tested oil for every MB engine that is in the MB A class to the SLK class to the Maybach, basically all their products.

Let me see, here is the list of Mobile-1 products I have in my Mobile oil book (rev 09-2005),

Mobil 1 Truck & SUV Formula
Mobil 1 0W-30
Mobil 1 0W-40
Mobil 1 5W-20
Mobil 1 5W-30
Mobil 1 10W-30

Also there are listed their extended performance products and their ATF, gear lube, grease are the only thing I find listed.

I don’t find euro blend as a standard product, it could be a special packaged product.

I did find jet engine mobile-1 oil.

To answer your question, if my truck was started with Mobile-1, stick with it. You will have a better engine life and extended oil change.

If it's not economically impossible it's a good idea to have one of each filter needed on hand just in case. I stopped at a Speedco with a Sterling with MB engine and they didn't have the oil filter. I had bought one a few weeks earlier when I was hit with a feeling it would be a problem to not have it. I'm going to get a set for the new truck before I leave town as well.

TJ, from reading your recent posts it sounds like your doing better than you were when we met at the J. Where did you end up? Also, I talked to a guy who had a late '04 model and he said that the requirement for synthetic had been droppped. He was using Rotella. I 2nd LDB on carrying filters. Sprinters don't have a good reputation on parts availability.

It says in the back of the manual which oils can be used and Rotella is on the list. I don't like to change oils though, so now I'm stuck with the Mobil-1. I know it's supposed to be real good oil but I've heard of sludge problems with some synthetics. The price of the oil really was not the issue. I was aware of the parts problem too, but thats why I called before I drove 112 miles to that dealership. From now on I'll have all the filters myself and I'll probably try Speedco. I had good luck with them with my other truck. I'd do it myself but I want the receipts to prove the services were done.

Highwaystar... Things are going much better. I guess the proof is in the long term relationship but I'm very satisfied so far. I ended up at ExpressWay. I'm #58. Next time we bump into each other I'm buying lunch.

My $.02 on changing oil is that it's not a big deal to do it once. It's when you do it often that it's a problem. I think the availability of Rotella would make it worthwhile.

Free food? I'm there, dude!!!
