Sprinter Myths

What?

I know there is some regulation that exempts you from logging when you return to you home base everyday like a "Day Cab" dedicated route.

But I thought being over 10,000 lbs GVWR requires every truck to scale? At least that is what the NY State Trooper told me when I stopped at one of their inspection sites, because I saw the sign that said, "All Commericial Vehicles." He waved me through and told me specifically that because I was under the 10,000 lb GVWR limit, I did not have to stop.

So at 11,300 lbs and those dual wheels which always seem to draw attention to any van type vehicle by enforcement agencies, how can you legally bypass a scale?

I believe the standard gvwr on the 07 Sprinter 3500 cargo van is 9990# with an optional gvwr of 11,030#.

Gentlemen please!!!!

Boy all you can see is the business and more business!!!
Your so vehimently rejectimg the Sprinters worth so strongly!!

And just what value number do we put on the comfort portion of this debate?

After almost 4 years in a tuna can and working sooo hard to be successful in this biz we thought we owed ourselves a little comfort!

Part of the purchase reasoning was that carrier did alot of aerospace, landing gear and engines that were in most cases too big for a reg CV...hence the Sprinter...Make some business sense now? aka need based on carriers customers needs.

We also use the sprinter for our personal needs. aka family in DC, Virginia and Canada. Traveling apartment.

BTW I like dhalls logic about the FSC...I'll prolly go with the gas version for 2009-10 models.

Why I purchased a sprinter.

I like the way it looks !!! Its different, kinda stands out in a crowd. Its the trendy thing to drive and it matches my personality. I was one of the first to run out and get the new VW Beetle when it came out and 1998 !!!

I like the driving position, the visibility, the quirky german features like the cooled glove compartment. I think the double articulated hinges on the rear doors are cool.

I like the fuel mileage. Mosty because I have to stop less. I hate to stop and get fuel, especially when its windy and cold.

I put a Mercedes grill and emblems back on mine, didn't cause me to get more loads or ones that pay more, but I like it !!!

I can stand up and WALK to my bed ! I can stand up and get dressed.

I like my sprinter just like the guy likes his big class 8 KW or Pete as a straight truck. Doesn't get him more pay than the FL70 guy, but its what he / she is proud of.

After all of that, I do get those extra paying loads from time to time because something is too tall for a CV.

i should have said was looking at a 3500 until i saw that 37" wheel wells and that it came in at 11,030 that was one i was looking at and had 16" wheels that took all the room
where 06 had the 15" tires and you had room to play with
and have to log was one of things i don't want to do
with the 2500 don't have to log

They must be much wider tires as well as 16" because 215/70-16 would be the same width as 215/70-15, just an inch greater diameter. I would only want the 3500 for the dual wheels so it they've screwed that up to not allow modifying for skids it's off the suspect list. That's too bad because otherwise it would be a good choice.

If you have a Sprinter 3500 with 11,030 GVW, BUT, you only plate it with 10,000 plates and NEVER carry a load to exceed 10,000 lbs GVW, are you still required to weigh and log? I only ask this because if this can be done, you would have an extra heavy duty van.

Good question!!

I suppose IF one were to get pulled over it would be up to the descretion of the officer how he/she interrupts the rule.

I would suspect it'd fall into the same as one who registers thier truck under 26,000 (even though it can take over that) so not to have a CDL B

Technically it doesn't matter what you call it, only what the manufacturer calls it on the sticker. It's possible one DOT officer might let it slide but another might not. It wouldn't be legal in any event.

So could you find a Dodge-approved body-builder and ask them if they will de-rate it for you .... and slap a new GVW sticker on there ?

I don't know if you could and I don't know if they would legally be able to or not. Even if they could and would there isn't any point to it if you can't alter the wheelwells to get skids in.
