Ok...we as a country are trying to be oil independent BUT we keep raising the speed limit so we consume more....any gains in MPG are in your exhaust!! Kinds like shooting ourselves in the foot.....

There is something that was said a while ago about Michigan. I have said there is a concerted effort to raise revenue by retiming the lights so everyone has to stop - consuming more fuel and raising the speed limit to again consume more fuel.

More fuel = More Taxes

Every one laughed at me but you are now seeing what I have seeing for a while.

Oh if you haven't heard, Michigan is exploring increasing all licensing fees for all commercial vehicles and increase the fuel taxes across the board again.

So your saying that me doing about 80-100MPH on 696 in my big ol V8 pickup truck is bad?

Ok here is my 2 cents. The speed limit is 60 now for trucks. Well if your getting better MPG doing 55 then do 55. Thats just the max you can go there is a minimum you must meet though. Just because it says 60 doesnt mean you have to go that fast. If truckers want to do 60 (or more) and burn up their profits then so be it.

unorthodoxneon I think we could have a snail race then! Our top speed is 59 mph. We have worked and worked with our fuel mileage and our truck does not like to go fast. Our greatest expense is our fuel and we do everything we can to lower that cost even if it means getting flipped off all of the time. Our carrier figures our pickup and delivery time at 45 mph.

just because the speed limit says 60 or 70 does not mean you have to do that if i can save fuel by going 55 -60 i will let the idiots flip me off or cuss me out i,m laughing all the way to the bank

OVM, where did you get the silly idea that "we as a country are trying to become energy independent"? Because some politicians said so, in a campaign speech? (Pause for hysterical laughter) That's just politically correct PR, they don't mean a word of it - if they did, we'd be putting a lot of resources into the various alternatives to oil, but we're (they're) not.
Our current leadership is heavily dependent on the revenue from oil, and also, at the highest levels, richly rewarded from their investments in the oil industry, why would they want to cut off their own income streams? Because it's healthier, smarter, and safer to use alternatives? I think that story begins with "Once upon a time"!
While those of us whose income is directly correlated to fuel usage have learned to become conservative, (slowing down, mostly), the powers that be don't even care about their own usage: how many gas guzzling vehicles accompany the VIP entourages, how many jets do they think nothing of hopping frequently, for whatever reason, how many really care about energy efficiency?
I think they like the higher speed limits: less chance of their being ticketed by some anal state trooper, when they're in a hurry. Like New Jersey Gov. Corzine, who was going 90 mph, (driven by a state trooper!) when he had the accident recently, on his way to a radio station, for a program he was to be on - a real emergency, I guess.

Solutions to the energy problem...

Raise Cafe standards - the only companies that can't comply are the three domestic companies - oh well... let them do what they had to do in the 60's and 70's conform or don't sell.

Impose mileage standards on trucks - what is more important emission standards that really don't matter or getting more miles per gallon?

Get the congress off their a** and get real with incentives for alternative energy, like no taxes on bio-fuels on all levels, no taxes on solar equipment and other self-generating stuff, force the states on a moratorium on sales tax related to improvements and material for energy savings and allow people to write off 100% on anything they do to save energy.

OH... I just woke up from that dream....

It amazes me that ALGORE didn't push this stuff while he was VP. Now that he won the peace prize, he decided to hold a little party in the south west with his Hollywood friends, having all kinds of food flown in, going from Europe to NY to the southwest in his Gulfstream V jet which by the way will burn about enough fuel getting to the US to run a truck 75000 miles - Really a great person there, fly commercial Al.

Alot of states and also the government offers incentives towards people that purchase alternative energy sources for thier homes. There is a few that dont though (can you guess one of them). One good thing for me in the future is Iowa is really big on RE incentives and keeps up on that stuff. I'm planning on eventually having a windmill and some solar panels at my place of residence there (once i get a residence) and there is quite a few people in the area i'm looking to move to that has windmills up.

I don't see anything wrong with driving under the speed limit to save money. My only word of advice on that is be careful not to get run over. Had it happen to me in New Mexico. In the middle of daylight. Of course I wasn't found at fault because I was rear ended, but it messed my day up. Another time I had a newbie on the truck with me in Ill. and he seemed to be doing good so I dosed off in the jump seat it was about midnight. The next thing I know I hear squillin tires, jake brake, air horn, and cussing on the cb. I ask the driver what happened, and he said you know what happened. I told him the situation, and he informed me my student was driving 40 down the interstate. Come to find out when he heard the turbo kick in he thought the motor was gonna blow.A week later I messed around and trusted him again. At 11pm in Detroit I told him to wake me up when we got to Chicago. He woke me up on the outskirts of Chicago at about 7:30 am. They must not teach much in truck driving school?
