Where is the best place to purchase chains for tires for our straight truck? Getting ready for the heavy snows coming before long!

I bought mine at a Pilot T/S in South Dakota, most of the larger truck stops out west sell them. You can also try truck tire delerships in the west. If I remember right I paid about $90.00 for 2 outside rear chains.

Thanks for the info. Okay, here is a real newbie question. Do you only put chains on the rear outside tires? Do states have different requirements regarding placement of chains?

On our type of trucks India they are just used on the drive axles. If you get a load going out west most truck stops carry them. It would also be a good idea to read the bad and get a general idea of how to put them on. We learned the hard way, while it was snowing very hard I read the bag with a flash light and gave Bob directions. It took a few tried but they where on there right. Now I am sad to say we just jump out there and we both know what our jobs are and we get them put on and down the road we go.

We ordered ours from:

http://www.tirechain.com/

Service is good. They ship the chains right to your house. Prices were the best we found anywhere. The site also has informative info on it about chains and chain laws in various states.

Would you drive the inside wheels up onto 2x4's to life the outside wheels off the ground a little bit to make it easier to put the chains on? I don't own chains. I may get a set of the automatic chains put on for just in case.

We have the automatic chains installed.

Personal experience has shown them to be inoperative in deep snow so best to carry a set of regulars.

But on a slick surface without a covering of deep snow they are truly great.

I plan to be parked if it's truly chain weather. I want the automatics to satisfy having chains if/when I go out west in early/late season when they're required but probably not needed. I also want them in case I have to use one of the docks you back down into. I got into one in Benton Harbor and almost couldn't get out. The automatic chains would have worked perfectly for that.
