Smells

I know I am new to this and this is my first real warm spell. How bad do these truck parking areas get in the summer? (Piss Smell) I had to move at the J in Tallahassee to another parking site it stunk so bad. Will this be with us all summer? If so cant wait for the snow again.

I for one do not disgard or empty piss bottles in parking lots.

You don't pee on the tires??? ;-)

Unless there's a good rain, it generally smells like a sewer. Oh well... I know how far out the trucks park, and the marathon to the latrine may cause some accidents. I don't agree with them dumping their containers, however. That's plain laziness.

Note to truckers... please wash your hands after using the restroom. You're touching the same buffet spoons I am! :-(

Broom,

This is a nasty subject indeed.

In fact, I know that several states have now made it a misdemeanor crime - it specifically targets "truckers".

I think it's just a sign of the times - people don't give two hoots about their "neighbor". It's all about me, me, me.

park close to the truckstop in the summer, also might want to park on a slight incline so it's runnin' past your rig, not sittin' level where it can settle within' the parkin' spot.

That's good advice. I forgot to mention about parking close to the truck stop. I usually find that the Js down south have spaces right next to the building that are usually empty. I pull into those as my wifi is pointing right at their antenna. And there's a garbage can practically outside my window.

Hey Kraig,

The great thing about our big sleeper (and my small BBQ grill) is we're practically self contained for extended periods. And noted as you have the truckstops can get pretty earthy we tend to now head for Wal-Marts, the RV/auto lots at truckstops, or a field or empty lot close-by.

We agree, close-in to the J seems the best usually, and the back rows are always the worst anywhere. We eat or shower if necessary (quick), otherwise we take advantage of the size of our expeditor as opposed to a semi, and go off the common path.

Remember Diamond Chemicals' 'Liquid Alive'? The bacteria is great at eating the residue from mishaps in carpet fibers, but I give a squirt to some fabric in the truck and use the smell as an odor detractant. Seems to neutralize it nicely. Oust is excellent too.

Hope that helps!

I think you hit it on the head.
The advantage of a large sleeper gives you that advantage. When we were driving, we seldom would sit in a truckstop. We liked the WalMarts and rest areas much better. Alot cleaner, and not as likely to lose a fender.

Ahh theres nothing like the stale smell of dried urine rising from the asphalt of a truckstop on a hot summers day.LOL I'm just kidding, remember one day I was just sitting in the drives seat looking out on the parking lot one evening only to see a driver emptying his one gallon milk jug toilet. I couldn't believe what I was seeing, he didn't have a care in the world, but not only that, I couln't believe he used that jug untile it was full. Think about it, what if it fell over and spilled after he took a corner real fast.LOL

I'm amazed that professional drivers have not figured out that there are simple solutions to this problem. For example, the Thetford 166 has a 4 gallon waste capacity and can be purchased at Wal Mart for $69 and some biodegradeable toilet chemicals for a few dollars more. When it's full, take the removable tank into a rest area bathroom, dump the contents into a toilet, flush the toilet, and you're good for another 4 gallons. Not too complicated.

Just because someone considers themselves a "professional driver", does not mean they have any usable gray matter between their ears.

How about the 4 wheeler white/black trash that changes their kids diaper in their car, then throws it on the grpound. I have seen that happen in rest areas.

I have seen truckers relieve themself at rest areas in the daylight thinking no one can see them taking a pee. This is while i am driving like 70 mph past them and they are on the hill of the rest area and practically drop their pants to relieve themself. They also use those empty one gallon plastic milk bottles to pee in and then leave them behind on the ground for the state employees to dispose of some how. I have had expeditors pull up to my truck before and drop pet feces on the ground right in front of me!! at truckstops. They leave these droppings behind rather than walk over to the trashcan or inside the restroom at the truckstop and use the toilet to flush the waste away. A friend of mine works at a Pilot truckstop and tells me horror stories of the nasty job they have of cleaning up after lazy, filfthy truckers that use the trash cans to empty their pee bottles or worse yet human feces. They are just too lazy or inconsiderate of their fellow human being to use the restrooms. Nothing makes me angrier then to see a trucker at a truckstop peeing on the parking lot usually doing it on their trailor tires rather than walking inside and using the restroom. Be careful when walking around truckstops especially at night. You cant see what is on the ground etc.. and you are more than likely stepping on human waste that has
accumulated on the truckstop parking lot asphalt. Try parking near the back of the truckstops, near the grass outer edges, try walking around in the grass, perhaps this might clean off the botton of your shoes when walking around, so you dont drag the filfth inside your own truck. This is some of the tricks i use while on the road. You never can be too careful out here that is for sure. Be safe and healthy out on the road!

Broom,

I can get some powered cheese for you. A little of this stuff sprinkled around the cab and sleeper and you won't even smell that bull rack you're parked next to. Some quality ear protection will block out the snorting and hoof stompimg.

Uh, Moot - you already described the cheese, & it might be more power than even this situation calls for, lol. :+

I was at the J in Indy earlier this week and some wanker had tossed a used condom right in the fuel lane next to the pumps. Filthy bast*rds.

It's interesting to see this thread come back after a year. Due to the SEVERE downturn in van freight I'm considering going to a bigger truck. Instead of having to park with the vermin in the big lot maybe I'll just get out.

I'm a rookie to expediting. I've been in it for a lil over a year, but i've seen expediters do some pretty nasty stuff in the parking lots as well. The main problem with the 18 wheelers is the big companies will hire anyone. At least that was the way it was with the first company I drove for.
