Slow cargo van freight?

About two weeks ago I read three times in 2 days "I run cheap(er) freight but I'm staying busy. I just shook my head."

Ban the van. Splinter the $printer.

.....and as to look onto a truck search site. ..I could careless where all other Vans are sitting ...I m moving to where my company is seeing movement of freight ...not to where other companies are sitting..
There's today's winner right there. The truck search only tells you half the story, and it's mostly the wrong half. Mostly it just tells you where freight gets delivered a lot.

For your keen industry savvy, you win the Grand prize of 3 weeks of vacation in lovely Bison, SD!

The Grand Prize cannot be refused or transferred, and has no cash value. Sorry.

Ok..thing is..we were running 10 years ago at $1.00 a mile when gas was only $1.50 a gallon and mechs. shop rate was like $65.00 an hr. and all other expenses were generously lower then they are now...and here we have some members 10 years later saying they are doing just fine at .90 a mile?.....DOH??.....i need enlightening on this concept.....

so 10 yrs in the future we'll be happy at the same .90?....by the above logic.

It's not just in expediting, it's across the spectrum.

Households and businesses and individuals all across the country are faced with higher costs in all sorts of areas while still living on the same--or very similar--income they had years ago. There's been a whole lot of adjusting going on in all walks of life; getting used to making do with less and learning to be happy with it, or at least learning how to pretend to be happy with it.

I don't 100% agree with this. Minimum wage has gone up. I did lawn care and I started at $14.25 but a few years ago the same company was starting pay at $9 an hour. This year that same company is starting guy at $15 an hour. The problem in my opinion with trucking is the amount of hands in the pot. You got some triple brokering going on with everyone get a chunk and then the driver gets what little is left.

As long as there are carriers and O/Os out there that are willing to work like that, it'll continue. It doesn't have to be that way. In a lot of cases, when they here "no" enough, somehow how more money for the run will magically appear.

First week of January, only 1 run. Previous Jans have been decent. In the hole after maint/repairs over Xmas. Girlfriend gets 5 runs in 6 days and is up over 2 grand on me. Not that it's a race, but how can I afford a 50/50 split with her on this income?

Everything is supply and demand. As long as there is a supply of O/O & IC's accepting cheap RPM then the demand will be that. Also brokers & shippers want to control the RPM but its actually the carrier, O/O, IC"S that control it. The control power to extablish a better Rate Per Mile is with everyone here posting on this thread. The more "No" the broker here the rate will go up. There are many new drivers out there too that dont know what a rate should be at. Brokers keep them busier. Now these days there is a huge supply of vehicles/owner operators standing by doing nothing. And its hard to say "NO" when parked for a whole week. But still the power to establish a honorable descent good "rate per mile" still lies with the drivers. Just have to say no to cheap freight.

Problem is most drivers aren't on this site. So, they have no clue that their doing anything to hurt rates. Need to put cards on windshields!

And I don't have a "slow" cargo van, mine rolls along really well. LOL
