I'm still laughing
As was said, the driver is responsible for the operation of thier vehicle. If there are any safety problems,it's up to the driver to have them fixed.THe excuse that the owner wouldn't fix them doesn't wash.If your owner won't fix, don't drive. If the glove does't fit,you have to acquit

It is amazing how some drivers think that it isn't their problem. I run into a few here and there that will not even change a light bulb but will pay someone to do it for them - it is a fast $20 for me.

One thing I feel that needs to be changed in the licensing process is actually being able to prove you can do things to maintain the truck within reason. Lights, checking oil, knowing were washer fluid goes, checking tire pressure the right way and how to check the brakes should all be a requirement for that license.

Absolutely agree, the driver is responsible for maintaining the vehicle - but it's the owner who is responsible for the cost, and that's where some drivers have found themselves in a tough spot. There are owners who will [as Doc Rushing said] quibble & quarrel over every dime spent, and delay [or refuse to pay] reimbursement for the out of pocket costs to the driver. I have known owners who wanted to save money by doing most repairs themselves, expecting the truck to be brought to them for that purpose, even suggesting minor repairs could be postponed until that was convenient.
Of course the easy answer is to refuse to go along with it, [and CSA will make that more likely], but my point is that drivers for those owners have too often had to decide whether to spend money they'd have to fight to get back, [or figured they could just kiss goodbye], or risk a violation for a minor offense, like a marker light.
That CSA is a wake up call for those owners is good, but it doesn't help the drivers who've had to deal with the 'difficult' owners in the past.
And you know they're out there.

I also know a number of owners who are just ****ing cheap too and they will insist on the repairs being done in house - at the owner's place or at a shop of the owner's choosing.

But here is the thing, there is a reason for a contract and there is a problem when the driver thinks they are not in control on some subjects. They are not just in control but have a responsibility to maintain the truck as a safe vehicle. The owner may be financially responsible but the driver is the one who is the one with the violation.

I break it down like this ...

Accessible lights - driver can repair

Brake hose to the chambers - driver can repair

Mud flap replacing or fixing - driver can repair

Broken mirror - driver can repair

Reflective tape - driver can repair

These seem to be the most common issues, and actually the easiest to fix. I know many will bulk at the brake hose thing but you know it is easy to do.
