This might be a dead thread record.
Yeah. We have things set up behind the scenes to where new users can't post any URLs (links) or certain key spam words/phrases in the forums or their profile posts until they've posted a predetermined number of posts. We do that instead of routinely making all new users have their first several posts Moderated (having to approve or disapprove every post from new people can at times be a lot of work for a Mod). At most forums, a meager 2 posts will get you past that threshold, which is why you sometimes see a new user posting short and almost nonsensical messages in replies, like the one above. Most spammers give up and go away if they have to wast time posting even one or two messages, but once they get to two, they're usually done.
But not here. It takes considerably more than that here. That's because, like our newly departed (deleted) fredwingg, spammers from places like India, China, Pakistan and the other 'stans, Russia, etc., are getting more determined. I recently watched someone post 6 essentially "Me, too!" and "I agree" posts within about a minute, trying to get to the magic number. He finally gave up and went away.
Most of the time we catch and delete users from foreign countries (probably an average of 2 or 3 a day), but sometimes they slip through. So it's more of a PITA for Chillout (and me) than it is for anyone else.
We have today instituted some more fine-grained tools to deal with potential spammers. One is, unless they're from the US or Canada, they can't even register. OK, that's more of a sledgehammer approach than it is fine-grained, but it works. 99.99% of people registering from other countries are spammers. The spammers from US and Canada have their own scoring scrutiny that looks at several things which can add up to an alert for rejection or moderation. The no posting of no-links for the first several messages still applies.
This should considerably cut down the work in having to delete all the foreigners who really have no interest or business in North American expediting, as well as the resurrection of ancient posts with nonsensical replies. :sxmas_santathumbup_100-100
