The town, yes, but at the beginning of the movie they firebombed a village in Africa.

The movie was only loosely based on, more like inspired by, the book.

Yeah, for my money they're playing fast and loose with the word "rapid."

It amazes me that none of the people in these hospitals have seen the movie "Outbreak" or read the nonfiction book "The Hot Zone" on which it was based.

Well, we know LOS hasn't, or he'd know better than to say that Ebola isn't an enemy the Army has the training or experience to deal with.
LOS: ask the people at Fort Dettrick!
As RLENT pointed out, that's precisely what USAMRIID [United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases] exists for.
Reading 'The Hot Zone', I'm wondering, though, about the scene where an Army Col in a full hazmat spacesuit chases a monkey around the room "for a couple hours" with a net: did they only have one net?!
Anyhow, Turtle was right: it's an excellent read.

Moreso than being a case of just one net, I think it was more a case of having just one colonel... willing to put on that HAZMAT suit... and go in there and fight that monkey. :D

Well cripes, there was a Sgt already in there, also suited up, so what's the point of rank, if you can't delegate?! :D
On topic: what would be the point of a travel ban, when people may be shedding the virus for days before they become symptomatic? It would only work if there were a rapid blood test to confirm/deny the virus, but that doesn't exist.

We should restrict Obama's travels to a Kansas out house. That would go a LONG way to limited disease.

Irrelevant
Repetitive
Disrespectful
Moronic
and
OFFENSIVE.

Why am I offended? Because I resent having intelligent conversation derailed, curtailed, and ended by such comments. They serve no other purpose, do they?

The airport screenings for Ebola are insufficient. An American physician, Dr. Craig Spencer, returned to the US after working with Ebola patients for 30 days in West Africa. Spencer passed through the airport screening designed to catch those showing symptoms. Obviously, Spencer did not show an elevated temperature and continued into the heart of NYC, where he rode the subway, took a ride with a car service, went bowling and, perhaps, visited a restaurant. Just a few hours after his bowling spree, Dr. Spencer who had reported feeling fatigue came down with a fever. Within a few more hours, Dr. Spencer tested positive for the Ebola virus.

Now comes word that some travelers meeting high risk criteria will be placed in special quarantine. Good idea.

"Insufficient" is being kind, I think. The airport screenings remind me of the "extraordinary" steps taken to quarantine returning astronauts from the Moon, where they placed the astronauts in quarantine for 3 weeks inside a converted Gulfsteam trailer in case they brought back any Moon pathogens.

The fact that they did that after the astronauts had just splashed down into the most fertile bacterium growth medium on the planet totally escaped the best and brightest minds on the planet.
