It is all about LUCK!

Phil,
I think Fastrod and Rich said it the best and clearest – “But when do you have total control if you are leased to a company.â€

See this is my point, you are not in control in reality, you have no choice outside of what is offered to you and if you are given a heads up on loads that they company holds, there is an ethical problem that the company has and you can truly say that luck has nothing to do with it, is that the case?

So sorry Phil, but it is not hard work of record keeping, it is not forecasting of trends, it is not watching industries that allow us, the owners to make money. These things help making the decision to go to an area and wait but not a driving factor in getting offers.

Having total control means having your own authority and your own customers. No need for a lease if you can make it on your own. And Greg I believe your right about the heads up on loads, just wonder if it extends a little farther then the A team?

Now now guys, please don't attack Phil, he has some really really important things that he shares with all of us and it helps everyone.

All most of his articles are very good except one and his truck is really a nice looking truck in person.

My thing is when someone says there is no luck involve, I can't let it go. I have had enough experience in business to know that luck has a lot to do with it but some don't ever want to admit it.

I am not attacking Phil at all. He gets my respect for knowing what he wants and doing what is needed to get it.

If there is no such thing as luck, how to account for all the lottery tickets sold? (After all, someone wins the money.)
Judging by the aftermath for many winners, I can't believe brains had much to do with it...;)
And wouldn't sheer luck play a part in whether your truck suffers an unforseen breakdown just after you've loaded, with a good run, or delivered it, & gone to a truck stop?

It would be redundant for me to continue to defend my view on luck, my view being that luck does not exist. I made my points as best as I know how above. Further examples would cover no new ground.

Part of the problem, I think, is different posters mean different things when they say "luck." We may be talking about the exact thing but calling it something different, so there may be little disagreement at all. So, if this thread were to continue, and I hope it does not, arriving at an agreement on what we are actually talking about would be in order.

Another thing is, what real difference does it make if someone believes in luck or not? We are not talking about God here, where belief or unbelieve has consequences for one's imortal soul (some say). We are talking about luck, whatever that is. If you believe in it, what happens different in your life than if you don't believe in it?

Rich: We routinely load 20 - 28,000 lbs. But not in a toy D.

If it's a typical D unit I would think they would have known they had 22,000 pounds as soon as they left the dock.

This is a great answer about depending on luck to make your business work. I do not believe in luck, but more in probabilities. And I believe that how one thinks about this business (or life in general) has more to do with prosperity than luck. Have you known or seen people who seem to have all the "so called" luck in life? They certainly have a great method for attracting the best of everything into their lives. Good fortune begins with proper thinking and attitudes. As you think and believe, so shall you receive.

If I may borrow some words from Samuel Goldwyn: "The harder you work, the luckier you get."

One can define luck as "the events or circumstances that operate for or against an individual".

Luck is just part of life and whether one believes in it or not your life will be governed by it.

I thought we have talked the luck thing pretty much to death, but apparently not.

Paul56 makes a concise point. Luck is something that governs you. Others say luck is something you make happen. Those are the two core views. You are in control or luck is in control.

There is no way to resolve this difference of opinion. It is more an item of faith than fact. It is is a point of view that people adopt as they are given to see it.

Thinking about this thread, I put luck to the test the other night at the Route 66 casino on I-40 west of Albuquerque, NM. Risking money I would not normally risk, I sat down in front of the slot machine that offers the chance to win one million dollars. I put a $20 bill in the slide tray which the machine drew in with a graceful whir.

I bet the max, which is required to be eligible to win the million. First spin, nothing. Second spin, nothing. Third spin. nothing. After that, I was no longer able to bet the max because I had used up too many credits. One more spin, nothing. Money all gone.

Not wanting to cheat Lady Luck out of her chance to show her true colors, I went to another slot machine. This one was a dollar slot. I slid a $10 bill into the machine. This one drew it in also with a graceful whir but also rewarded me with a series of dings and light flashes.

First spin. nothing. Second spin, nothing. Third spin, nothing. Fourth spin, nothing. Fifth spin, nothing. Sixth spin, nothing. Seventh spin, nothing. Eighth spin, nothing. Ninth spin, nothing. Tenth spin, nothing. Money gone.

Conclusion drawn: If luck really does exist, I am an unlucky man.

Now there will be those that rise to say I played the machines all wrong. They will tell me how to watch the machines that others play before picking a machine to play myself. They will tell me to pick a machine that sits not in a corner but out in the open. The idea there is the house puts looser slots where more people can see them pay off.

But is that about luck or skill?

Thinking more about this as I left the casino, it occured to me the people who are lucky with slot machines are the ones that own them.

Luck is easy to define. It's being in the right place at the right time. In expediting, the harder you work, the smarter you work, puts you in the right place more often. The more you're in the right place, the better chance you'll be there at the right time. Simple as that.

That supports my conclusion that I am an unlucky man, because no matter where I am, there is someplace better. Above, I said that I do not believe in luck, and that remains true. But if I assume for the sake of discussion that luck exists, I can only conclude that I am an unlucky man.

My lottery tickets go worthless after every drawing. My luck at slot machines is not good. If luck is about being in the right place at the right time, I am unlucky that way too. Someone is always getting a load better than me.
