Home now. Waited until 6:15 for a chance at a second load today from Sterling Heights. Didn't happen.
2.5 hrs. ago I experienced something traumatic while on Mound Rd. southbound. I'll never ever forget it.
3 lanes of traffic, N & S divided by a 20' wide grass median. I saw it happen, I heard a loud bang and saw the first hit into a small 5" diameter tree and then the telephone pole crunched him, stopping him from flipping onto his roof and coming into me and other cars. I wished he would have. It would have been a better result for him I'm sure! A working man's pick up truck Flew, dirt and grass flew, everything out of the bed of his truck jarred onto it's side flew into my SB lanes of traffic. Instinct made me yank my Sprinter hard into a business parking lot edge. Threw it into park, grabbed my phone and fueling gloves, told Maggie STAY. And ran into traffic, making them stop on my SB side so I could get to him. Engine smoking, I didn't know what I would see but only adrenaline told me get him out in now in case this thing flames! I saw a hand move towards the shattered, hanging windshield, then his other hand. He's alive, conscious. Could not see a face or any other body parts. He was jammed in there from every side. Bloody, I heard muttering. I yelled at him to hold still and get your hands back! Two young men appeared and we pulled at the windshield and hood. There was absolutley no way to get him out. Thank God he was small and slender...could judge by his forearms. I looked to my left in the nB Lane was his tire laying on it's side. Lazy people, in a hurry to get home wouldn't get out to pick it up and roll it to the side so again I stopped traffic and went out to roll it to the curb. Unbelievable! It's a 50 mile per hour zone and this man was in the far left, fast lane. I think it was his left front tire that snapped off and caused this. He was flipped on his side when the tire came off, then hit the curb. A small tree first and then the really hard hit of the Telephone Pole. He's lucky...I hope. No air bag, no frontal impact. All other tires were were still on his truck. ****. I had my front struts replaced last year at 265K...I was hearing clunking sounds on my steers and told Wayne. Had him check and he said I was lucky, a bad accident could have happened. God, please let this father, son, brother, uncle, friend be ok. The sight and sound was large and out of place and seeing it happen was like so foreign and in slow motion. My mind couldn't believe what I was seeing happen.
As I climbed into my Sprinter 3 Rescue Trucks, Police Officers and a fire truck with Jaws of Life were cutting him out.
Listen to your vehicle....please. Always make sure your extinguisher is current and handy as you could save someone from burning to death before your eyes (my main fear) and always wear HiViz yellow or orange like I have for more than 5 years. It helped me stop traffic tonight...plus I'm sur my face was quite businesslike. I don't remember honestly. I just didn't want more accidents.
Got a load just now. Lansing to Columbus....someone backed out of it, so I covered it. I want to sleep. I don't want to think about this. I keep having big sighs. Have to get up earlyto go get it. New front brake pads Sunday. You all please, please be safe, leave space, don't push, wear HiViz, Help when you can, love your family, tell them, show them. Good night. I feel numb thinking of him. I want to Ball right now.
