im in roanoke va and saw a rjr expeditor with a freightliner semi and a 28 foot pup trailer so i had to talk to him he said that his company allows him to do it so he can do straight truck and small heavy t/t loads and its easier for him to get around found it pretty interesting anyone know of any other companies using this technique?makes him very useful says he has a friend that uses a 32 ft pup.

Are you talking about those ones they deliver 'Coke' from? A cab with a thing on it to attach a smaller trailer.. so it's like a combo ST and small TT? Was talking to a guy and he said much easier to get around.. I think these ones are not dock high tho. They are so cool!

I'm sure the trailer he is referring to is dock height . A lot of freight companies run them as doubles . I remember reading of at least one expediter running this combo as a "D" unit .

its dock high and he has a sleeper 70 inch condo and he isnt run doubles with it his didnt have a liftgate but his buddy with the 32fter does have a lift-gate and yes he asked to be run as a straight truck but he says he gets alot of tractor trailer freight and pay and it is lot easier to get around as apposed to a 53fter and it packs in almost the same amount of space as my 64" straight with a 22ft box and the kicker was he ran super singles on the truck so he only had 6 wheels like my straight truck so he paid the same in tolls as i do and think he was very smart in his approach to this i asked alot of questions and he was more than happy to answer.he can fit 14 pallets on his pup so he gets alot of smaller semi loads but he is always available for straight truck loads because of the size of his truck.he is only 2 ft longer than our 40 ft restriction has a good size sleeper and can haul either load with no strain to his truck.

I haven't seen one but have thought about it as an excellent way to go. The only drawback is you must meet t/t requirements for insurance so you can't take years of s/t experience and step into one of those even though it would be very similar to the s/t operationally.

It gives you some awesome sleeper possibilities too. You could have a tractor 40 feet long. Behind the cab you could have a whole-lot-a sleeper and then the fifth-wheel.

Very true for a person like me who has 9 yrs over the road it would seem like a very good idea his friend thought of everything he is running a 32ft pup with super single wide tires(6) tires total reefer and liftgate it might just catch on for class a license drivers that want to pull a shorter trailer and he has no problems navigating truck stops and short parking lots and his class 8 component truck is designed for this type of work more so then my m2 business class straight truck

Up here in New England those pup trailers are used with a day cab by by every LTL carrier there is. Tight streets need their versatility and maneuverability.

This is nothing new, There have been a few trucks leased on to FedEx Custom Critical/Roberts Express White Glove Div. I would always see the truck at the Flying J in 1999.

This configuration has been out there for years. I can see where it would be an asset to an expediter, if the carrier would allow it. Fast food places have been using the pup with a tractor for daily food delivery for a very long time. The pups come with different specs, and My question would be how easy is it to find a good used one. I see them delivering to pizza places, and burger joints all the time. Many applications are liftgate with reefer.

The biggest problem you'll have, unless you order one new and built to spec, is finding one with air ride. Just about all the used ones you'll come across are going to be spring ride.

That's true but having looked at this route as well - a new (dry box anyway) doesn't cost that much more than a box for a ST and when you look at what's added (4 wheels, brakes, suspension, etc) its really quite a bargain in comparison.

**** **** **** talked to my company about doing this and was turned down its either straight truck or 53 fter can drive a 53 fter have been doing it for 9 years but my previous employer also had 32 fters with lift hate and reefer and would use them on days i had to do schools smaller parking lots and getting a 28 footer or a 32 footer around is almost the same as the straight truck.i would rather try to find parking for the 28 footer than the 53 thats why i didnt sign on as a tractor driver i had found a volvo with auto shift and the trailer complete with lift gate and it would have cost me less than getting a used straight with a lift axle for carrying more weight this really sucks i even told them i would take straight pay rate and fsc unless it was tractor freight weight and was told no will do i feel like protesting

Did they give an intelligent reason why they wouldn't sign one on as a D unit at D pay unless it was carrying over D weight and then pay it E rate? The only legitimate reason I can see would be insurance company stipulations and with experience in a 53' that shouldn't be an issue.

I pull my 40' trailer[van] with my 2000 fld. I bought the great dane from ryder in Phx for $2400.00 and that included a 3000# anthony tuck under with all alum large deck. I added after market 4 bag air ride for another $2500.00. It's tandem, but I may remove one axle cause I don't do heavy. Landstar has allowed me to be a D unit, but the reasons are long and involved and would probaly only make sense to leam folks. I would like to be reefer too but maybe down the road. What i like most is that if expediting dries/dies, hookup to a 53 and be gone. I had the straight trks but always felt the company had me by the short hairs because leam was the only expediter i wanted to work for. i feel i make myself avail for more offers and gives the company another resource in a very competive market. i tried a 53 w/liftgate for awhile then i remembered why i left big trks, . I have been surprised by the # of loads that took all 40 feet.. luck to all.
