If not, we should give the driver the benefit of the doubt. Note that it was night. A trailer engulfed in flames is something that can be easily overlooked when doing a pretrip inspection in the dark.
If you read the article linked above, you'll see that he didn't have time to switch his duty status before taking the wheel - even the police called him a hero.
It's nice to see some positive press on trucks drivers, for a change.

Thank you for your selfless act. I hope both you and the other driver are recovering or recovered.Wow...sure brings back some not so fond memories. Last November I was sleeping while my wife was driving. She hollered "there's is a big truck on fire"!!! I don't remember getting dressed. Just climbing into that inferno to pull the trapped driver out. Just like this guy..he just did it....there is no time to think it through..... I may be a little more reluctant the next time though. Oh...hey gang..I have never posted before, but this may be my therapy.
