Self-Certified ???

Just received the below in an email from the cat. Anyone care to pound or expound on this subject.

Friendly reminder, all CDL holders who have not “Self-Certified” with the state licensing agency that issued your CDL must do so by Thursday, January 30th. CDL holders must also send a copy of your current medical certificate. Most states sent instructional letters to address listed on CDL. Don’t wait until the last minute, it can take up to 10 days for the licensing agency to update their database.

Call your DMV.
You have to fill out a form, 4 questions.
They also need a copy of your physical, if required.

All you have to do to self-certify is to declare what type of trucking you do. You will select Non-Excepted Interstate since you don't drive exclusively intrastate and you aren't excepted (farm, municipal employee, etc.). Then, along with the self-certification form, you need to give the state driver's licensing agency your medical card. Mississippi DMV (601) 987-1212.

This only applies if you have a CDL, of course.

Is it a medical card or your long form ?

In the past, Indiana required the long form. That was before this latest set of regs.

Federal regs say just the card. If a state wants the long form, I'd sure want to know why they think they are entitled to such private medical information.

Years back, when In first requested the long form, they rejected it twice because it was incomplete.
I'd been given a card after a partial test.
About 2004.

They threatened to pull my CDL, which made my company correct things quickly. I was a Teamster at the time. Using their clinic.

Started to up date my med. certif. back on Nov. 12, after 4 attempts to fax my info. into the Safety and Homeland Security dept. that is handling this update for Tenn.. I mailed the required info to their dept. Then on Dec. 12 I called their office and after several attempts did reach a person who checked and advised that my file had not been updated. I was advised to fax the info into them, which I did on Dec. 13. I have tried many times to check and see if my file has been updated to no avail. I get a message to leave a voice message and they would get back to me within 5 days. You can not leave a message as their mail box is full. Our Govt. at work! Will keep trying to reach a person via phone to see if my file has been updated. As I understand this requirement, if your file has not been updated with this new self certif. after the Jan. 30, 2014 deadline your CDL is not any good.

In Wisconsin I was told, by my doctor, to take the card directly to WI DMV and hand it to them. For no charge, they scanned it into their system. I know it was done because I stood there and watched them do the update to my CDL. In Wisconsin, you can just walk in to the DMV, give them your card, and they handle it on the spot and hand you back your card. I also took in the long form, they didn't even want to see it.

I got a new medical card back in September. That day I scanned the self-certification and the medical card and e-mailed them in a PDF to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. The next day I got an e-mail letting me know they received the certification and medical certificate and that my records had been updated.

Yea, that's part of the new rule, your Medical Card is tied to your CDL now. If you don't keep up with them they will downgrade your license.

I did the same in PA,they say you can mail a copy and they will mail you a receipt.I don't trust that so I went in person and got my receipt. They only want the card, but you have to enlarge it to 5 x 7.

My guess, and it's only a guess, is that as various states experimented with this in years past, some required the long form.
Now that the new law is here, requiring the card only, some workers are confused and are still asking for the long form.

We always place an enlarged copy of our cards in our permit book.
At an inspection it's there and you wouldn't need to wake up a codriver.

If I ever had a codriver that slept through an inspection it would scare me.

I did reach a real person today at TDOT after many attempts since 12-13-13. Requested they check and see if my file has been updated - "NOPE" . Advised the party that I had been trying since 11-20-13 to get this completed and that I had mailed as well as faxed the required info to their office. I was put on hold and after several minutes they came back and said they had found the info and would update my file within 5 minutes. My questions is: should I trust them to accomplish this small task?

They should mail you a receipt,at least in PA they do. They are being a real PITA, aren't they. I feel for you. I had the same crap with my HazMat, the State Trooper who fingerprinted, me messed up my fingerprints, and they were digital too,how do you do that, anyway I had to keep calling them, four months later they sent another letter to get fingerprinted again, got the HazMat a month later, five months to renew a HazMat,that's crazy. They don't care, they still get there pay check. State police don't do it anymore in PA,they send you to a contractor,I'm so glad. I hope all works out for you soon,I would ask for a receipt.
